my poppies were a freebie, i haven't planted them, about 5 yrs ago they just appeared. the leaves grow out of the ground just normally, but the poppy stems corkscrew, they are always twisted, even though i tie them to canes to try to get them to grow straight, any ideas why please

Sounds like they could have a virus. Have you tried other poppies?

I would reckon a virus too. Why not PM one of the new boys, Barbara, they know about those things I believe.

Hello
virus is not usually passed in seed in many species- for reasons I don't know- but its one of the reasons i spend late summer gathering Primula seed to sow.
So if they are annuals sown from seed its probably not that- i don't know of any poppy disease that causes corkscrewing- it SOUNDS like a physiological problem- some of the fumitory weeds can cork screw in dusty dry soil, but that's just my observation.
I've got a grey wilson book on poppies in the van-I'll look tomorrow and see if there is something in that- I'll get back to you but may be a few days, not been on board for a while, dead busy.

Hello again,
i couldn't find anything- so I'd guess its poor soil, soil capping, poor root run- and the plant hasn't been physically able to get upright.
surely there is a double entendre or a fnaar fnaar in there? Where's mycowaz when you need him?
Let me know if this sounds wrong and I'll ask someone who knows more than me.

Hi Barbara,is it possible that a weedkiller spray has drifted on to your poppies, from somewhere, ive seen weeds in hedgerows, corkscrew, after a farmer has sprayed his field, and they have had just a slight drift.
