We need to replace our conventional charcoal barbeque and have started looking around at what's on the market. We don't want a gas barbeque for various reasons, but the main one being that we want something that we can leave in the garden during the summer months. We've seen barbeques with covers, but have also looked at chimeras, and I wonder if anyone here cooks using a chimera, and can advise or comment on it. Many thanks!

Isn't a chimera a mythological creature?!

Well I've only ever seen them used as patio heater things and they throw out a helluva lot of heat. Dunno how easy it would be to cook on.

A friend of mine used hers for a BBQ , but only the once....it got so hot that the food just burnt on the outside and was raw inside....maybe she did something wrong..I don't know.
It makes a great outdoor heater though.

That's what i thought MRH. They get incredibly hot so I don't think food would cook all that easily unless you only put a little fuel in there. Fire pits might be a better idea but then again that's not much different to a BBQ lol

Mmmmm that overheating thing makes sense. I think we'll have to look into it further, but I think a chimenea looks nicer than a barbeque if it's being left out most of the time.

I've got a copper fire bowl - I use just one log which lasts all night and the heat is wonderful - it has a grid to cook food on it but I havnt used it for that, yet
I got it from Trentham Gardens Plocket ;D

Doesn't a fire bowl take up a lot more space than a chimenea though? I like the look of them but with our dinky garden we need compact ;D

Yes they are a bit wider and don't look as pretty.

type chimenea into the search bar on the argos website and it brings some up (scroll down from the cooker hoods ) They don't look that bad but my personal preference would be a chimenea if I could afford one. I'd still cook on a BBQ rather than try to use a chimenea. When we eventually get a patio ( ) I'm going to have a chimenea. By the time that happens, you'll probably be replacing yours and I can have first dibs hehehe ;D

Yay!!! <claps>
And it's nice that one. See what I mean about the cooking though? The grill is just above the flames so how on earth are you meant to cook on that?!

Yes Plocket they are rather wide but I think attractive - they are (well mine is) set on wrought iron legs and low on the ground
The copper has now turned a really nice hue - I may take a photo, if I can remember, when I next light it

I'd love to see a photo thanks Jenny I do see what you mean Aprilaydee so I think we are going to have to go and look at some more before we decide. It is early days in the season though (in my book anyway - perhaps not according to OH though!)

According to retail it isn't!! Most of the sales and what not will be about now because they know most people will think it's too early to think about it but they have them to try to get people in the door. You might find a bargain!

We've looked at them in a couple of places and haven't seen sales on Oh well OH has just rung to say that he has got his bonus so I can start thinking properly now! ;D

We've both had large wage packets this week so we're hoping to get some bedroom furniture but the sets we saw in Argos are out of stock so I dunno. Might go have a mooch next week on our week off.

I've been planning to extend the patio (get rid of a patchy shaded soden rectangle of grass) but I might get a friend to quote for the job which will get it done a lot quicker than if OH and I did it ourselves. Of course more patio means more pots of plants, space for clematis!!! Oh and the chimenea!!!!! ;D

Sounds good. We're hopin to make a patio at some point... ;D

Well you've got a lot of other things to be getting on with too. ;D
This is the only improvement we'll do in the garden this year. It will mean no more soggy grass (although we are keeping one small circle of grass for the rabbit to use) but lots more space for pots (ie more plants!) and more space for the table and chairs, and a barbeque or chimenea. At the moment it's just wasted space and although we put the table on the grass there last year it wasn't really practical.

We want to have a patio or maybe decking but probably a patio from the back of the house out into the garden and then steps down to the garden.
We've got it all planned and know what we want it's just getting the funds to get it!

That's our problem too. Hopefully our friend can do it on the cheap - it isn't a large area after all! ;D

I think we'll just have to do it ourselves. We can't afford the materials at the moment though either. Plus, I think there are some Peonies there so will see what comes up.
We will get the front garden sorted at least next week. When I say sorted I mean chop some things down and try to sort the lawn a bit.

I don't know yet whether we can afford to have C do it, but I'll get the quote anyway as he's coming to quote for another job that needs doing in the house.
Chopping down is great fun - as long as you haven't got a whole forest to destroy! ;D

I thought this was about Chimera vs BBQ !!! Just come back fromm a holiday in a gite in France - it had a chimera - we (sorry, our daughter) used it to barbeque - we had five excellent meals and she only used one bag of charcoal - I asked twice "Do I buy another bag ?" I was amazed ! Obviously the secret is not use use too much fuel
