We need to replace our conventional charcoal barbeque and have started looking around at what's on the market. We don't want a gas barbeque for various reasons, but the main one being that we want something that we can leave in the garden during the summer months. We've seen barbeques with covers, but have also looked at chimeras, and I wonder if anyone here cooks using a chimera, and can advise or comment on it. Many thanks!

We have a chiminea in the courtyard but don't use it to cook on, a bit small. It's really great for heating though. We have a charcoal and gas BBQ for cooking. I personally love the flavour of the charcoal and use it for the 'quickie' food, steaks and the like, the gas is used for slower cooking and bigger gatherings. The charcoal one is also used as a fire pit, sometimes on it's own and sometimes after we've finished cooking too. That's nice after a good feed. I probably haven't been much use there, sorry.

We use to have a charcoal BBQ but then went with gas for convenience, brilliant when you suddenly decide Ooooooh lets BBQ. To be honest we've not found a lot of difference in taste, you still get that outdoor cooked flavour when the fat hits the coals and smokes or flames There are some great Chiminea's on this site www.castironchimineas.co.uk/The%20Range.htm and some are described as a BBQ Chimenea.

Thanks everyone! We've got our eye on a couple of Chimeneas that also have cooking grills and really wondered whether the cooking was any different - whether it was more like roasted food than barbequeued food. We've used gas barbeques before and think they are fantastic but we can't afford one, and wouldn't want to leave it outside all the time.

My last chiminea (now ex husbands ) had a grill within the mouth bit. A bit tricky to get food in and out. I found that using those basket things you clamp burgers in very useful. Also quite good for parceled food if you double the foil. You don't want to tear the parcel getting it out!! The one we have now in the courtyard has the grill under the chimney. It's quite small and has gone very rusty because it's cast iron but at least we don't have to do the slow heat up of a clay one. I hasten to add, we don't use it for cooking!! There is also another grill at the top of the chimney and that is used for either a coffee pot or keeping mulled wine warm. It does throw out a lot of heat all around so I'm careful how close I place plant pots around it. The kids (19 and 21 ) don't think of things like that. ;D
