Something I have found quite a lot over the years in soil/compost are shiny, chestnut-brown torpedo shaped cases about 3/4 inch in length. Previously I have squashed them, and creamy pus-type stuff is inside , or sometimes they are empty. But I have stopped doing that now cos I suspect they may be beetle pupae Does anyone know for sure what they are?

Yes I have to agree that they sound like pupa. You might be destroying something worth having in your garden NO

Oh bggr. Thanks for that site Rita. MssK has this red velvet mite. The not too bad one but the larvea sometimes bite humans and this causes allergic reactions. Here I was thinking this January nextdoors cat gave me fleas that I reacted allergic to. Must have been that larvea as I had been cutting down Leylandii all day. And my legs were.... interesting. We live and learn. Now for a pic of the larvea as the big fat red mamma and pappa are clearly what they are but there is no pic of the larvea there. At least I know what to look for.

I find them too, but usually tuck them up somewhere cosy, like under leaves. I have always though they were butterflies.

Yikes I don't think mine can be anything pesky, because I don't have bitten leaves. Bet I do this year, when I'm having a go at Brassicas.
