I always used to split it in autumn Barbara but I can't see why you shouldn't do it now, perhaps a bit late but if you were quick and watered it well afterwards, then I think it would work.
I hope someone else can help. The one that I have now isn't big enough to split yet.

It does split. Why not do it now if you want to? Water well before and after the process, and I'd shade the replantings to stop the sun from wilting them. As to how I'd have a poke around the roots. I have a feeling the roots aren't very fibrous, I could be wrong. If you tease parts away from the whole, and come across a thick root, just sever it cleanly. Make sure each part has a shoot on it. I'd probably pot up the new bits, and give them time to settle before replanting.
