I am thinking of buying a couple of Bokashi bins to keep in the utility room for our kitchen waste. Does anyoe have them? Are they really free of odour and flies?

We've had them a while. 2 actually. A lot nicer than wormeries, smells very pickled, like vinegar!! Not unpleasant at all. We lined one of our bean trenches with the solids, it isn't 'decomposed' like composting, a couple of weeks ago and we're comparing it with normal home made compost.
The liquid, we call it Ems goo, is a lot nicer to use too but a lot stronger than wormery goo!!! 30/1 I believe!

This is interesting. Please keep this thread going as the summer progresses as I would love to use one of them too - my compost bins are a trek away when it's pouring with rain or I'm busy cooking so anything which I can keep closer to hand and shove stuff in quickly would be really handy. I've tried just keeping a covered bucket but it usually ends up really stinky or buzzing with flies....not good with kiddies rushing past and crashing about regularly....I'd like to hear how the Bokashi bins are working before I shell out the spondoolies.... ;D

Well they have lids that seal down air tight 4P, so no smells or flies!! You have to squeeze the contents in as much as possible to get rid of the air, hence the air tight, then once it's full, which takes a surprising amount of time, leave it for 2 weeks to 'pickle'.
Our wormery has now been moved up to the woodshed because of the flies! The Bokashi is still down at the house however!! ;D
