I've taken some cuttings today I know it's not rocket science but it is my first attempt, and I just hope I have done them OK Mixed mpc with vermiculite, removed lower leaves from cutting, used hormone rooting powder, cuttings pushed in about 1"? I have put plastic bags over them, secured with a lackie band, and they are on the floor of the front bedroom, warm, but not in direct sun. Fingers crossed. x Tig

Sounds good Tig. When taking cuttings with dahlias, the best thing to do is get nice healthy plump tubers. Get them potted up early...maybe in january even and get them into leaf nice and early. As the new shoots grow and reach about 3" tall, take tip cuttings but try to make sure you get a slither of the tuber on the cutting. They root really quickly especially with bottom heat and humidity. Pot them up but continue taking cuttings. The tubers can then be planted but the cuttings are the ones that will make the show plants. Make sure the dahlias are planted in rich soil and watered well during dry spells as this will make the tubers nice and big and ready for the following spring. But i'm sure yours will be fine

now my dahlia which I sowed this year from seed are starting to flower I wonder how your cuttings have done Tig. If some of mine turn out to be especially nice I'll want to try taking cuttings for next year.

I'm a bit disapointed with my dahlias from seed, they've all turned out to be yellow, maybe I'll have trot round my neighbours, I gave quite a few away, maybe they've got something more interesting. If not I'm back to tubers for next year

When I pinched the tops out of the Dahlias I've grown from seed I popped them in a glass of water and within a few weeks they grew tiny knobbly bits, Mmmm I thought you Noo Noo these must be the start of roots. I potted them up and now have 8 new little plants

I did'nt know you could do that Chuckles, well done, that might even be a more reliable way of propagating rather than sowing seeds.

Thanks Chuckles - that sounds a much easier way to get them started than what I tried! x Tig
