No Jenny - that doesn't sound right at all! All the butternut squashes we have had are like pumpkin inside and they are yummy roasted with mushrooms, onions, leeks, peppers, a bit of olive oil and thyme and probably lots of other things too!!

It sounds to me like you bought one which was 'off' Jen? The ones I have bought had virtually no smell to them, they were similar to pumkin in texture, not stringy, quite creamy when roasted. Tig

Don't be put off Jenny because they really are scrummy. If you have the receipt still go back and complain and say it smelt too bad to keep...or email head office and see what they have to say for themselves.

It's hard to say what they taste of - there's nothing really to compare it with but it tastes much nicer than pumpkin (I think) and it does make a yummy dish roasted with any of the other veggies I mentioned at the beginning of the thread (and lots of others too probably - we just use our favourites). I like doing my own packing - it means you can put everything where you want it. When we were on holiday in the States not only did they pack for you (and one thing to a bag sometimes ) they also wheel your trolley out to the car so you stand at the till like a bit of a lemon with no job to do and then you trail aimlessly out to your car - I have never liked that very much.

No squash doesn't taste like any of the veggies you listed Jenny but they're all yummy - I love mashed swede with butter! It's really hard to think of a comparison. Pumpkin isn't similar to marrow either - my mum used to make soup with pumpkin or a sweet pumpkin pie both of which were fairly gross but we weren't allowed to leave anything when I was a little girl or you got it for the next meal and the next til you ate it. Don't let your bad experience put you off Jenny - try butternut squash and see what you think. Maybe go somewhere else other than Tesco though if you have a choice! ;D

I love butternut squash im even growing some in my garden this year. The one you describe Jenny sounds awfull i have never found any like that i have bought. Like Tig said it sounds as if it was off because it shouldnt be like that inside.

Thank you - I "may" try one again but all the ingredients I got for the receipe were not used - as the Squash was the main ingredient
So inside they have lots of seeds ? So what was all that bright red string inside mine ?

They just have a core of seeds in the bulbous part Jen, I reckon it was stringy because it was going (had gone!!) over. Better luck next time - I don't think they have a lot of taste personally, it is was you add to them, they easily absorb the flavour of curry spices when roasted x Tig

It makes a lovely soup Jenny, although I prefer the winter squash for that - gorgeous yellow colour and soooo tasty. Save that one for a winter warmer - I'm sure you'll love it

Jenny what a shame, you had such a 'rotten' experience. We grew squash a couple of years ago. They are like triffids, we had loads and loads of squash, had to give them away and store under the bed!! They were lovely instead of potatoes. In soup they were fantastic. A friend gave me some seeds out of a shop bought squash and 50% have come up this year.... so hopefully we will be repeating our squash feast. Pumpkins are sweeter, more of an acquired taste, growing one of those to try this year too. Try again Jenny with the squash, they are supposed to be really good for you.
