Does anyone here grow and collect geseneraids? Hi kristina, I've only had the odd African Violet and Gloxinia as a house plant, never really grown them or collected them. Is it something you grow and collect, they are lovely and there are so many different species in the gesneriad family

Yes I have grown, showed and judged geseneriads for a few years now. Other gessies are a little easier to grow than african violets.
I really enjoy them and I am attending the african violet society of america convention next week in Tulsa Oklahoma. It is my first convention and am very excited about attending.

I'm not very good with indoor plants Kristina, though I have great success outdoors. Though I have a couple of African Violets which stay looking good for me. They must be very forgiving. I can imagine how you feel about your convention though. We all get excited when we look at our favourite plants, don't we? They are like a drug. ;D

Used to grow most of the gesnariacea familia...gloxinnia, streptocarpus, gesnarias, African violets etc....what is it you want to know about them or do you just want to converse with people who grow them.

I just wanted to know if there were any fellow lovers here is all. Oh yes...you really can't beat the sight of a decent gloxinnia...probably the most spectacular summer flowering pot plant there is. Do you grow yours from corms or seed ?...we used to grow all of ours from seed (tiny dust like seeds) every year. They can be a swine to grow...botrytis loves gesneriads and the watering has to be monitored very carefully. Well worth the effort though.

I do not have gloxina at present but adore them.
I have grown from those tiny seeds from time to time. Being a Member of the Geseneriad Society I have access to their seed bank one can end up with a thousand plants from that I tell ya. Talk about nice plants. Whew

Gesnerias are well worth growing too....bright scarlet spikes of flowers exploding over mid green foliage.
Episcias were another one we used to grow a lot of....dianthiflora for baskets and i think there was a red one called E. cuphea

Lovely creamy one that. I had the purple ones but with my south facing windowsill right above the central heating they simply don't do well. I am mostly down to cactii now. But those do flower.
