I grew some Autumn King marigolds from seed last year and they put on a lovely show in the garden. I didn't pull them up, just left them. Noticed earlier this year that they'd started greening up again and have started flowering. The growth is definitely from the base of the old stem and not from seeds dropped last year. I've never done them before and thought they were an annual. Can any of you flower experts tell me anything about them? Can I just leave them and expect more of the same next year or have I just been lucky? Or is this a particularly numpty set of questions? ;D

I haven't a clue. I left Antirriniums in one year, and was amazed when they flowered beautifully again. I'm a bit of a numpty too, let's face it.

Are we talking about French marigolds, i.e. tagetes, or pot marigolds i.e. calendula?
Calendulas are perennials, tagetes are annuals.

Must be calendula then Brian. Thankyou for that And Wee, you are far from being a numpty. That title belongs almost exclusively to me

As has been said calendula are hardy Shrub, they're lovely flowers. I'm sure yours are in flower now. I collected the seeds from some of mine last year and they've got buds on them now. They really shine out in the borders.

You'll be quite surprised what comes through a winter if left in a sheltered place...Antirrinums, allysum, lobelia, begonias and even petunias will come back. Never seen french or african marigolds come back but as Brian says, calendulas often will.

Thanks all! I knew it was a bit of a numpty question but I thought all marigolds were annuals. They've bushed up beautifully this year and have gorgeous flowers on them - and yes LNG they do sing out from the borders dont they? I left them to seed themselves about last year and have lots of little seedlings coming up too. I have allysum that I leave out through winter Andy (well, I think it's allysum) - always comes back.

I do think a lot more plants are hardy now with our milder winters compared to 20 years or so ago. To our benifit I think.

This year and last I have had begonia semperflorens that were left in containers come back to life And I've got some self-seeded Morning Glories!! PS Shrubby - I have never heard of Marigold Autumn King so I tried googling it and it came up with nothing. Where did you get the seed??

Calendula is hardy? I thought they were not. Maybe it is the winter wet that kills them then. Live and learn Although my book also says Callendula officinalis is a hardy annual. That is potmarigold is it not? The perennial one is said to be a shrub. Erm pics please? I would like to see what plant you are talking about.

And I have un petit confession to make - they're not 'autumn' king, they're orange king! Sorry about all that 'googling'!!!! They are gorgeous though! I'll post a pic Dutchy. They were left all through the winter and they're on clay so it does get pretty wet at times but they've survived and are getting a lot bushier too. I really love them now.
