I bought a few different bare root perenials, the ones in little placcy bags that all GC's sell. Followed the planting instructions and waited and waited til I could stand it no longer. On checking them, all the tops have rotted and the roots are dead. So what am I doing wrong. I have been careful not to overwater, I added grit to the compost to help drainage but no luck. Does anyone else have the same problem or have yours romped away. Anyone got any tips?

I have found it all depends on the flower type, and how long they have been in the bags. I doubt you have done anything wrong. I don't buy them anymore. I'd put the experience behind you, blame them, and not yourself. Roses are always better, I find, if they are bought bareroot from the grower in the winter.

It migh not be the correct way of doing things but what I have tended to do in the past with these 'desiccated' perennials is to simply place them in a bowl of water for a few days to give them a chance to revive, before potting up or planting out as required.
