Taking onboard CarolAnn's suggestion regarding our own GWD Birdwatch GWD Birdwatchwe have been able to construct a poll which not only allows for 35 'entries' but allows each Member 35 votes. It is as generally inclusive as we can make it - though we know you will have some rarities that cannot be 'voted' for. So, as there is no need for anonymity in this poll, as well as voting, add a post to the thread listing your votes and add any others you would consider to be sightings you regularly make at home or maybe on the way to work. Blackbird Blue tit Bullfinch Carrion crow Chaffinch Chiffchaff Coal Tit Collared dove Dunnock Goldcrest Goldfinch Great tit Greenfinch Gull (any sort) Hawk (any sort of bird of prey) Heron House Martin House sparrow Jackdaw Jay Long-tailed tit Magpie Nuthatch Owls (any sort) Pheasant Robin Rook Starling Swallow Swift Thrushes Wagtail (any sort) Woodpeckers (any sort) Woodpigeon Wren We're sorry this is a predominantly Euro list. To all our further-flung Members: please join in, we'd like to know what you consider 'usual' too - it would be great if you could post some pics, if not of your own sightings, then maybe a web-sourced one? Ok... here's my list, c/p'd from the one at the top and with 'no-shows' deleted:
Blackbird Blue tit Carrion crow Chaffinch Coal Tit Dunnock Goldcrest Great tit Hawk (any sort of bird of prey) Jackdaw Jay Long-tailed tit Magpie Owls (any sort) Pheasant Robin Rook Starling Swallow Swift Thrushes Wagtail (any sort) Woodpeckers (any sort) Woodpigeon Wren
It's something of a comfort that although the RSPB 'census day' always seems to coincide with a total lack of birds to count, when you think what you've seen through the year, the list is better... OM.

Lovely idea This is my list of regulars - Blackbird Blue tit Carrion crow Chaffinch Coal Tit Collared dove Goldfinch Great tit Greenfinch Gull (any sort) Hawk (any sort of bird of prey) Heron House sparrow Jackdaw Long-tailed tit Magpie Robin Rook Starling Swallow Swift Thrushes Wagtail (any sort) Wren I hear owls, but don't see them, and we see pheasants when we are out and about in the lanes. We have protected marshland not far from our property and often see geese, ducks and swans flying in and out. x Tig

Here's my list. We also hear Owls, lots but rarely see them. Gone are the days when I used to drive down the lane at dusk in the Autumn escorted by a Barn Owl. That WAS special! Also we do see Goldfinches and even Goldcrests but so rarely (twice this year for the first and none yet for the second) I didn't vote on them. Blackbird Blue tit Carrion crow Chaffinch Coal Tit Collared dove Dunnock Great tit Greenfinch Gull (any sort) Hawk (any sort of bird of prey) Heron House sparrow Jay Long-tailed tit Magpie Pheasant Robin Rook Starling Swallow Swift Thrushes Wagtail (any sort) Woodpeckers (any sort) Woodpigeon Wren
We also used to have House Martins nesting here every year (messy B**gers). I'd forgive them if they would only come back. We don't have anywhere near as many Swallows and Swifts now but do see them regularly.

What a lovely list! I've ticked woodpeckers and owls even though we hear them rather than see them.

I have just wakened up. I laid my head on a cushion on the settee 2 hours ago, and am still gaga. So too tired for a list I have most of those, but no jays, chiffchaff, goldcrest, nuthatch, and a sighting of goldfinches and bullfinches is met with squeals of delight. But I have ducks and moorhens in the garden sometimes, when they've been out for a stroll, and drop in for afternoon tea.

Just noticed after 14 votes there are only 3 birds which are seen by all 14. Blackbird, great Tit and Magpie. And OMG house sparrow only has 9 votes!! They really are in decline then. Not here though, despite us removing their favourite roosting place, the Clematis montana. We are overrun with them!

Our Long Tailed Tits seemed to have vanished, we have not seen any of them for a couple of months now so I didnt tick that. We have Owls, Little and Tawny in the Valley but we only hear them. Amo mine are Greenfinches but forgot to put it on my list, also the Goldfinches. Last night there where a pair of Lapwings chasing off Gulls and Crows in the field at the side of the house. We also have a pair of Oyster Catchers that visit the Res. This list is great as I can check roughly through all your locations and see what sort of birds we all have in common and what we dont.

Ok here is my list
Blackbird Blue tit Bullfinch Carrion crow Chaffinch Chiffchaff Coal Tit Collared dove Dunnock Goldfinch Great tit Greenfinch Gull (any sort) Hawk (any sort of bird of prey) Heron House Martin House sparrow Jackdaw Jay Long-tailed tit Magpie Nuthatch Pheasant Robin Rook Starling Swallow Swift Thrushes Wagtail (any sort) Woodpeckers (any sort) Woodpigeon Wren
I have left owls out for the simple reason we hear them rather than see them. Goldcrest - not sure so I have left that out as well.
To add to the list we have
Hawfinch (a rare but welcome guest) Redstart White Stork Coat Tit Marsh Tit Garden Warbler Willow Warbler Crested Tit - saw it in winter - gorgeous little thing.
plus Ducks, Swams , and Cormorants flying over.
That is all I can think of at the moment.

For the first time since we moved here over 15 years ago, today I saw a Jay in the garden, a bit wet and bedraggled and it flew off before I could snatch the camera!

Most of these we see regularly, though some only now & again (but enough to know they're in the area & it's not a one-off):
Blackbird Blue tit Carrion crow Chaffinch Coal Tit Collared dove Dunnock Goldfinch Great tit Greenfinch House Martin House sparrow Long-tailed tit Robin Starling Thrushes Woodpigeon Wren
We also see swallows & swifts and occasionally herons & gulls flying over, but only in the distance. And we've twice seen a bird of prey in the garden, but I couldn't exactly call them regular visitors.

Living so near to the city centre we don't get the variety that the country-folk do...altho we do see several very regularly.
Blackbird Thrush Gold Finch Green Finch Blue Tit Great Tit House Sparrow Dunnock Wren Starling Wood Pigeon Collared Dove Robin Chaffinch
The variety depends on the season...all of the above were here from April until mid-summer...but nowadays many are less frequent visitors..
We also have a local sparrowhawk that circles above now and then...I've only spotted it in the garden once this year ..

I'm not very good at naming the birds that come by <need-to-get-a-southern-ontario-birdbook-smiley> but I can say for sure I don't see as wide a variety as I see named here. And yes, as expected, with a few exceptions, you don't see the same ones all through the season. One thing though, I am seeing more birds coming by than when we first moved here about 4 years ago, so that's encouraging. So through the season I've seen:
robins American goldfinch cardinals blue jays house sparrows mourning doves some other brown birds ;D and another fair-sized spotted brown bird once woodpeckers grackle (bullies; don't like them) hummingbirds (just one pair probably nested nearby) lots of geese, gulls and ducks (mallards and some other ones; we are a stone's throw from the lake shore (Lake Ontario) a pair of swans once (lake) a pair of loons on the lake and flying over our house a few times chicadee some starling-like birds (might be starlings) waxbill crows a hawk circling overhead occasionaly

We had a jay visit the garden this week. It's the first time I've ever seen one in our garden (and only about the 3rd time I've ever seen one anywhere). It was beautiful to see. Sadly, no chance to get my camera before it flew off.
