Is there a priest out there? I need some forgiveness people. Next week we're getting some decking put in where our patio area currently is and tonight I had to kill off the clematis we have growing through the trellis that is being ripped out next week. Tell you what, it really did break my heart. I was out there with the Roundup tonight and I was actually saying sorry to the clematis as I was spraying it. I'd love to be able to keep it, but it's just too rampant and the decking is going straight over the area where it's currently going. Has anyne else ever had this? I feel terrible. You can see the clematis in this pic, behind the bench...

Was it a montana DG? If it was I have had to remove one that got a bit too rampant and nearly strangled two shrubs close by. But I didn't enjoy doing it! Couldn't you have just pulled it up and moved it to the front garden rather than treating it with Roundup?

Hi Tig, unfortunately no. I don't really have anywhere it could go to be honest, and I can't risk leaving any roots still in the ground if I pull it up so that it can regrow through the decking, so it needs to be cpmpletely dead and killing it off systemically is the ony thing I can really do. Definitely not Montana, but it is an early flowering type that comes back in the Autumn if trimmed. Like I said, having seen other clematis that have regrown despite being cut right down to the ground, I really had to kill it off completely. Don't feel good about it though...

I know how you feel FG - I have always felt awful getting rid of healthy plants.
A few years ago I dug out three Clems, sprayed with Round-up and something else, put matting down and tons of gravel - 3 months later I had a Clem shoot coming up - I gave up after that and it is still there - I changed my plans to accommodate it.

Know how you feel DG - it's a rotten thing to have to do isn't it? Mind you, clems do have a habit of coming back as RF says - we have one that has refused to die!
