Just recently AVG free has been pushing their "non-free" (£39) anti-virus. A scary ad keeps telling me that if I continue with the free version I will not have proper anti-virus protection I have been ignoring it as in 15 months no virus has ever been found. AVG has done a "full" test every day for 3 days now which has detected a virus called JS/Downloader Agent, which AVG goes on to say it is destroying and then says it cannot Call me suspicious and cynical but this seems too much of a coincidence Is it a scare tactic? Has anyone else been getting this? Anyone heard of JS/Downloader Agent? I would be grateful for advice on this from some of our more computer-savvy members

I haven't heard of anything you mention Nightowl, but it always pays to be cynical.

My AVG asked to be up-dated which I have done and made sure it was the FREE one. It upgraded alright to the AVG 8.0 without problems

OH has used AVG for less than a year, but so far has found no problems with it.
It is possible it is coincidence but seems a bit dodgy to me, or you could be unlucky enough to get a virus which it found at the same time as it suggested you pay money for it!

I thought the free one was stopping at the end of April or May? On the strength of that we subscribed to the one being promoted - but also because OH runs his business from home so we couldn't afford to have problems with the set up here. Since we've installed it, things take a little longer to access/download etc but it's doing its job so suppose I shouldn't complain!

Oh, meant to add that we understood that the freebie version wouldn't be updated, so would increasingly be unable to deal with new viruses. Dont know if that's true though

It does not provide safe surfing (drive-by download protection) nor protection from hackers, keyloggers, spam, phishing attacks and malicious file downloads that can come through instant messaging and attachments from seemingly friendly sources. This protection is only available in the commercial versions of AVG products.
- Slower updates - AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0 receives updates via a lower priority service. Priority updating via high-speed servers is only available for the commercial versions of AVG products.
- No telephone or e-mail technical support - There is no telephone or e-mail technical support provided by AVG for users of AVG Free Edition products anywhere in the world. AVG Free Edition users have access to support via the self-help AVG Free Forum.
No customisation - Scheduling options in AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0 are very limited (only one scheduled update per day, one scheduled scan per day etc.). The AVG Resident Shield configuration is limited with no exclusion settings. AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition does not offer advanced testing options, password-protected archives reporting, adjustment of scan process priority and many other features.
- No server support - AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0 cannot be installed on server operating systems (such as Windows Server 2003), nor can it be used for the scanning of network drives.
There is an AVG Free forum for users to share experiences and it may be worth perusing to see if anyone else has felt pressured into buying the commercial (paid for) software. freeforum.avg.com/Personally, I use ZoneAlarm Security Suite which offers Firewall, Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, IM and email protection. I also have a hardware firewall on the basis that you can never have too much security!

Is ZoneAlarm a free thingy then Spruance or is it something you've paid for. If it's free could you provide the link because I'd be interested.

ZoneAlarm offer a free basic firewall, which if compatible with AVG's free antivirus may be a good compromise. My version was originally around £30 on an Amazon promotion, and now I just pay a renewal fee for continued support and upgrades as they become available. For instance a two year renewal is currently $59.95 (around £30), which is pretty good value for money IMO. I am just drawing to the end of the previous two year renewal and will definitely be subscribing again. I have been a ZoneAlarm user for around three and a half years now and have had no virus/spyware problems in all that time. I am more than satisfied and happy to recommend ZA to anyone looking for a good all round internet security package. This is ZA's home page, which also carries a download link for the free firewall... www.zonealarm.com/store/content/catalog/products/znalm/comparison.jspIt is well worth checking the likes of Amazon UK and Play.com, as Amazon especially seem to have frequent discounts on ZA products.

I decided to download the new free AVG anyway but ran into the question I never know the correct answer to (and I should really after having a computer for nearly 18 months) I know it makes me look like a complete div , but when I am downloading something I always get to the bit that says " DO YOU WANT TO SAVE, OR RUN, THIS FILE?" And I never know what to click Cos yes I do want to save it into my computer, and yes I want to run it so it does what it's supposed to! I tried clicking RUN and it said it was going into a temporary file. Well that's no good is it cos it'll get wiped out when I delete Temporary Files like you're supposed to every so often (aren't you?) At this stage of the game I feel a right idiot asking this , but HELP? ? ;D

hi there, this was a question i had when i first had a pc. when it says 'do u want to save or run this file' you have already found if you click run it saves to a temp file, Now, do you have a file that you keep things like photos etc in? Always click 'save' and it will pop up a list of files that you already keep things in. Just choose one of those to save it in, then when you want to use the file go back to the file you saved it in and double click on said file and it will open and then you can run it from there.
sounds harder than it is but honestly its dead easy . if you get into trouble pm me and i'll talk you thru it.
hope iv made sense lol

I have been using AVG free and Zone alarm free for YEARS and I've NEVER had any problems what so ever.
I also use adaware for checkin for spy ware etc. All free.
I upgraded to AVG 8.0 recently and it's still doing the same job just as well as it did before but I've not had anything such as JS downloader appear on mine.

I've now upgraded to AVG Free 8 or whatever it's called. Hopefully it will work as well as version 7 seemed to.
