I have acquired some Honesty seeds and was wondering when I should plant them. Do I put them into pots in the plastic GH or do I put them straight into the ground?
I have heard that they take a long time to grow, approx 18 months...is this right? Do they like sun or shade?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Hi Missy! Not sure how long they take to flower, sorry. I have them seeding in the garden - just let them do their thing and they seem to be happiest in shade where the ground is damp mostly although some are venturing into a very sunny spot. Not very helpful that!!!

I 'aquired' some seed last year and sowed them in pots and put them in a cool part of the GH. Would of been the cold frame had I had one then. They just got on with it and I planted them out this spring. I have some large plants in the garden now. One did a bit of flowering but I think they will really do some next year. I'm sure they would have flowered this year had they been put straight into the soil but I'm so raw with the beds at the moment I would have forgotten them and pulled them as weeds!!
Like foxgloves though, you really need to be doing it for about three years to make sure you get succession.

Honesty is a biennial, Missredhead so will take a while to flower..but if you sow now you may get flowers next Spring. It's as tough as old boots so just pop the seeds in the ground where you want them to flower. I don't think they are very fussy about soil or aspect - I have them growing everywhere in my garden, in bright sun, in cracks in the patio and under trees - as Amo says, if you sow another batch next Spring you will then have established a two yearly cycle where you get flowers every year. They're lovely plants and a welcome sight, Spring and Autumn I think.

My SIL gave me some seed heads last year to pass to a friend for flower arranging I peeled the seeds heads for her and I saved the seeds for myself Found the seeds again a few weeks ago and planted some in a pot Now have a mass of seedlings about 3 - 4 inches tall - need to plant them out

Thanks everyone...will plant half out into the garden and put some in pots to see which is best. I too tend to start things in pots cos I pull up things thinking that they are weeds
