As I think that some of the standard of photographs on here can be really rather good, I wondered if some of you would be interested in the annual RHS Photographic Competition. Closing date is September 2008. It's open to both members and non members but there is a fee of £4 and £5 respectivly for each image sent in. www.rhs.org.uk/news/photocomp.aspIt's interesting to see past winners but they only show one year of all three winners in each category!! Perhaps you'd let us know if you're thinking of having a go

That's rather a nice idea Amo and we do have some truly wonderful pics posted here. Would be great to see a GWD member amongst the winners.

Can anyone tell me what the winning pic is of in the 2007 photographer of the year. I cant seem to see just what it is supposed to be, is it me just being thick or what?

I think it's one of the Phormium Tricolours up close. Pink Stripe may be. Not really what I'd call first place material. Just shows everyones got a chance. ;D

I like the idea of entering but wouldn't know which photo to send. I don't mean that to sound arrogant but it would have to be superb to stand a chance of winning! ;D

I rather like your "all blue" one Plocket. They are looking for something suitable for a Greetings card, and I think that one would fit the bill perfectly. Apologies for being horrible, but compared to some of the photos on here, I don't think their prizewinners were anything special. Have you looked?

Have a look at this for more information www.rhs.org.uk/news/photocomp.aspthere are links to previous winners from 2004 to 2007 Whispering -I don't think much to last years overall winning photo - can't work out what the photo is of Most if not all of the photo's posted on GWD are far far superior IMO!

I don't know whether this would help any of you but I can open a thread for pics to be posted on purely for consideration for the competition - nothing to do with the POTM.
What do you all think?

Well of the three they are showing I don't think much of the house one - it's pretty but nothing special. The alium is lovely and although I really like the top stripy photo it could be a picture of wallpaper!!! I've looked at all the photographs they show for previous years and they are beautiful photographs. It would be difficult to know what the judges are after!

All down to personal choice Plocket, that's why it is worth entering.

Don't know if they're ignoring you on purpose RF It may be an idea to have a thread where members could post a selection of photos to get a concensus on which may be best to enter. I've got so many brilliant ones that i would need some help choosing ;D

It's quite alright Ruthie - I am used to being ignored (hehe) - actually I was chatting to Amo about it and we wanted to check first whether there is a "pre-publishing" paragraph about the photo's. It could cause problems should there be one.

All it seems to say in the small print that accompanies the form is: - 9 A photograph that has won a prize in another major photographic competition (or the RHS competition in previous years) is not eligible.(I'm sorry, but I don't think POM on GWD is a major. Well it is to us lot I know ;D) I think the other three major points for us lot with our digi pics are: - 10 Only prints may be submitted. No slides or transparencies. Prints from slides are acceptable. Prints must not be mounted. Images should be no larger than A4 size. Black and white and colour images are allowed. Entries by email are not acceptable
11 Digital images may be submitted as prints but must not be submitted on disk. Digital prints must be clearly marked as such on the reverse and if any digital enhancement techniques have been used, they must be declared.
12 All entries should be clearly labelled on the reverse stating the name, address, date of birth, category entered and whether the image was digitally processed. There is a entry form on the link above with all the blurb attached. I don't think there would be a problem with having our own 'What do you think' thread. I can always contact them if anyone this it necessary.

Thanks Amo
I am quite happy to start a thread - how do we want it though - locked, comments, just photos, open , poll at the end...
Any ideas?

A members only comments I think RF.
As the closing date is September, and scarily that's not a million miles away, perhaps we could have our own poll at the end then??

Ok - what I can do is to put a thread on the POTM board , thus making it only for registered members - it cannot be seen from outside.
My suggestion would be - I will move this thread over to that board and also open a thread for photos. I see no problem is having a poll - I can upload the pics to the admin PB account.
Is that OK?

I guess we'll have to submit our own photos and some that we've seen on here? I think it's a nice idea - it would certainly give me the confidence to enter if people backed me up. Likewise I'd like to support others.

Is the Garden Gllery not just for members then RF? Just worried that the thread may get a little forgotten about up there in the separate thread bits.

I usually go along with things, but this time, I don't think we should have a nomination-type thread. Although it would encourage someone if they got backing, it might, conversely, put someone off if they didn't. Judging is so personal, that our tastes don't really matter, as we are not the judges. Am I being a prat? Am I the only one with this weird idea? Sorry

I must admit that something has been bugging me a bit and I think you're right WeeT. But perhaps it could be more general in that If I have four photos of the same flower and wasn't sure which had the edge, was a better colour, better focus etc, would that be OK? I don't want to be in competition with you lot as it were, and I'm not saying I've got anything to enter yet!!!, how does that feel WeeT?

I don't mind any which way, - a thread would be ideal for keeping all the pics together and not scattered around. There doesn't have to be a Poll - it can just be a sort of central collecting thread. This thread could go over as well - or we could put a link on here to the other thread.
The Gallery is an open board and I feel that if we are going to collect pics then it has to be on a board that is only open to registered members. In theory someone on the web could see a pic and declare it as theirs.
The POTM sub is ideal as most members land up there when I do the PM all for the POTM Poll - blimey that's a mouthful. Also any pics for the competition would have to be excluded from the POTM as they could be from a few months ago, so it would be better to have them all under one hat, so to speak.
Let me know anyway.

OK RF. We can use it as a sounding board if anyone wishes to Rita, if you have the photo, and I think you always have a hunch when you get a goodie, there are shops out there that would do it for you.

Dear Amo.......Nothing of what I said was a criticism of you, I hope you realise that. You take a cracking Photo and should enter the competition without a doubt. A section containing photos we are thinking of entering sounds fine, it is just the voting and nominating I was uncertain of. It is so easy to dent someone's confidence or hurt their feelings. We are all drawn to different aspects of a photo, whether it be colour or subject, but the real judges will have different criteria, which is why our thoughts are not really valid. A while ago, I posted a photo which my family think is great, and it wasn't nominated for POTM. It did make me think maybe it was rubbish. Hell, I'm making a mountain out of a molehill here.
