I seem have one of these in the garden, are they ok? I have googled and I think they only eat dead wood....
Assume they are safe for the kids to be near (they wouldn't touch them just like looking)

As far as I know your children are completely safe, particularly if they don't touch it JD , and very lucky to see one these spectacular beasties nowadays I haven't seen one for years, they are definitely rarer now

That's a great 'find' Jardack. As NO says, they are a rarity nowadays and definitely good for the garden as far as I understand. So, one big/little beastie to be protected methinks

We did rescue a Stag Beetlette the other day from the cat. Still recorded though. It's sad these take for granted things are becoming rarer.

Hopefully it's trundled off somewhere to breed more Stag Beetles I don't know if they can fly . Wouldn't want one bumping into me! Had a Maybug bump into my head once!!! Horrible!!

I've had another look around for him and there is no sign Hopefully he's gone somewhere nicer... I've got lots of bark chippings in my garden tho so he might be hiding!! Jardack
