Hi! Computer numpty here again I followed a link to something called " RegCure", which offers a free download of something that will "clean up" my computer and make it run better and faster! Sounds great! Doesn't it? BUT IS IT? Is it safe ? Am I an idiot (don't answer that ) Sorry, I suppose I should just have asked Spru via PM as he'll probably provide the answer anyway

Can you not just get rid of unwanted files yourself NO? I wouldn't use anything like that, I'd rather buy software myself if I had to. Think it is always better to be very cautious.

Unless you really know what you are doing, it is best to consider the computer's registry as 'off limits', as it would be very easy to corrupt your whole system if you alter or delete the wrong files. I have personally never heard of regcure but you should already have various cleanup options within System Tools... Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools. Regcure is unlikely to offer very much - if any - benefit over the built-in Microsoft tools and at least you can be sure that the Microsoft utilities will not adversely affect your system's performance.

The only thing other than my Sophos antivirus I have on my computer is Spyware Doctor and Registry Mechanic. No need for anything else. They deal with all the virus' and keyboard hackers and I certainly don't follow strange links promising allsorts! Please be carefull NO!!

I am even more of a divvy with computers than I realised My boyfriend has not used a computer since his own one packed up over a year ago. Someone told him they had sent photos to his email address. So I thought he could look at them on my computer...easy enough, we thought, people back-packing around the world can pick up and send their messages in any internet cafe.......how difficult can it be? But we don't know how to do it. We also thought he could check his banking online on my computer, and we haven't a clue how to do that either Cos everything on this computer is mine, all mine How do you get another person's stuff on your computer I know families share them but how?? HELP? Please? If the e.mail acc is an online provider one like blabla@Google.co.uk or blabla@hotmail....tiscali.co.uk....virgin.net etc you just need to log on to the providers website and there will be an E-Mail option and he just signs in as he normally would. If its Outlook Express or any of the other e.mail programmes then he can't look at it on your pc I'm afraid as they are specific to a particular pc. The only option there is to get his PC fixed or get someone to copy the hard drive and load whatever on to your pc. As for on line banking you just load the banks site, say Halifax or Lloyds etc and there will be a on line banking bit or a sign in bit. I'm not that keyed up on pc's but I think I'm right, hope that helps

He should be able to just go to the home page of the email provider he's with such as www.aol.co.uk etc and log into his email from there. Same for the internet banking, just go to www.Natwest.com etc and there will be an online banking section where he can just log in. If you want to create him an account on your PC you just need to go to Start>>Control Panel>>User accounts>>create new account.

What you are looking for is the "webmail" option with is accessed by Internet Explorer or Firefox (better). Regarding the problem with registry entries and virus, I gave up using Windows for the internet last year. I switched to the Ubuntu (Linux) OS which doesn't suffer from these problems, as nothing can write to the system without your express permission. Execute (.exe) files don't work with Linux.

Oh and if anyone downloads the latest windows update and then can't get online and you're using Zone Alarm... It's apparently a Zone Alarm issue and if you decrease your security level to medium or so, you should be able to get online. Failing that, do a system restore to before the update and it should work again.

If you did a System Restore wouldn't you lose the update? I apologise if that's a really thickie question

I appear to have been a 'victim' of this problem myself. I couldn't get online last night but didn't pursue it as I was tired, and actually only discovered the cause on phoning Plusnet Support this evening. I have now downloaded the updated ZoneAlarm product and everything is fine and dandy again. ;D This is ZA's suggested course of action.... download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/pressReleases/2008/LossOfInternetAccessIssue.html

Yeah I was too Spru, did a system restore and it worked fine again until the update so figured that it was that causing the problem. Googled and found the forums advising lowering security to medium and now the email arrived with the above link to the updated version.
All fine and dandy again now. Nice of ZA really to get it sorted so fast especially as it's a free product.
