I know this isn't going to help right now KL but that horrible sicky smell does go after a few days. You've cleaned it all down so it will fade. Do you have any smelly candles or something similar to help cover the smell for a few days? Oldest twin was sick in our car a few times when he was smaller (and a friends! ) and even after cleaning everything down it smelled bad but it did go after a few days.

Bicarbonate of soda Either make up a solution and soak the stain. Or wait till the carpet has dried out and rub the dry powder into the area. Keeping a bottle of Soda Water in the house is a good thing because it can be dabbed into 'bodily fluid' messes, human or animal, and it will help enormously. If the smell refuses to go, visit a petshop or vet and buy a spray for when animals perform on carpets or upholstery. And I don't mean when they do a song from 'Cabaret" That is handy always to have around the house too. It usually smells of bubblegum, which I quite like. I don't have any of that in the house of course, because my daughter borrows everything and doesn't bring anything back.

'Neutradol carpet odour destroyer' is OK at getting rid of pet smells from carpets, and says it will sort any 'unpleasant' odours, only problem I have found with using it, my new vacuum has two filters and the instructions say not to use it to hoover up such products But I still have my old electrolux and that can cope (who says new is best??!!) You only sprinkle it over the area - leave for 15 minutes - then vacuum it up. x Tig

Can't help wondering why Karl is so against chucking it out if it's so minging anyway Is your kitchen sooo huge that the cost of replacement is OTT? (You could cover my kitchen floor with a 6 x 4 offcut!)

Thanks for all the tips. We still have a very smelly carpet. I am waiting for Karl to mend the shampooer so that I can have another go at it. If that dont do the trick I am going for Bicarb, Neutradol, febreze, and shake and vac. By the time I've bought all that I could have had a new carpet! Yes NO our Kitchen is quite big and the cost of replacing the carpet would be too much at the moment. Someone is having lorry driving lessons!

Maybe there's already a half-decent floor covering under the carpet that you could put up with for a while Your carpet sounds so disgusting that anything would be better than that

I'll bet the smell isn't nearly as bad as she thinks. She'll have her nose right down there, sniffing like crazy. Probably no-one else can smell anything. ;D

Have you had a look at the floor underneath KL? Is it just bare boards, or concrete?

Not nice for the hounds to lie on tho is it and I'm not buying them baskets because they fight over them and chew them.......I learnt that lesson years ago Nope just have to wait for the smell to subside and buy a new carpet when I am a minted wagon driver ;D
