You can tell its raining and I am bored, just been through all the smileys list! Why is it we have two names for the same thing namely England Flag and Wales Flag ? They are of course the same! If we had seperate ones for Scotland and Ireland in addition to England then I would understand as they make up the Union Flag

Couldn't let the side down, could I? Here's mine.... The green stands for catholics, the orange for protestants and the white for the hopes for peace between them.

Hi Shrub.
Mother was born just before the Free State. So you can imagine the stories I was told as a wee boy! One of the nicest words she had for poor old De Valera was "Traitor", even to her dying day, some 80+ years later. Not hard to see where me obduracy comes from.

Donner und blitzen! Sacre Bleu! Heavens Above! Nein!, Non, Good Lord No. Not that. Johnny Foreigner and Ted, God rest his soul, can keep it. I like veggies with mud on and have shapes that do not fit through measuring hoops!

NO. At the risk of bring down a tirade of abuse.
There is no seperate Welsh flag. At the time the Union process Wales was already "part" of ENGLAND and as such had the same flag! So the flags used to make the Union Flag were ENGLAND, Scotland and Ireland During the 1920' and 30s following the formation of the Free State and latterly Eire it was decided not to remove the cross of St Patrick from the Union Flag. Anyway I guess it covers Northern Ireland.
The Dragon Flag is an unofficial flag that was popularised nd adopted much later

Just because England refuses to recognise it doesn't mean it doesn't exist or doesn't mean a lot to some people. Wales has never been 'part' of England in spirit and never will be. Why not be happy to recognise diversity instead of denying people their heritage and culture when it does no harm to you and enriches the world. The French have been doing the same to the Bretons and the Spanish to the Basques. What is wrong with people enjoying their own culture if it does not diminish anyone else's. Wales has a rich culture of music and poetry to offer with a beautiful language. Would you prefer to see that disappear. If they choose to unite behind Y Ddraig Goch why not let them.

Blodau.
I have not and would never deny anyone their heritage. Which is why I am first English. Although there are times when I am not allowed to express that. Whereas of course you are. I merely make a tongue in cheek technical observation regarding the Union Flag. There is one important contribution you omitted which I think is very important. viz. If it were not for the Welsh miners we would not have the NHS.

Sorry Fozzie I know you didn't mean anything by your posts. It's just a sensitive subject. As a Welsh person living in England, it's difficult to always shrug off the comments. Then if you don't you're told you don't have a sense of humour. I'm fully supportive of the English enjoying their cultural heritage too (as I said on the St George's day thread) and I married an Englishman. I look forward to the day when everyone accepts diversity in all its many and wonderful forms. After all England gave us Shakespeare and Des O'Connor for which the world is surely grateful. Blod P.S. I heartily agree with your quote btw. I've always said I don't intend to turn up at the pearly gates and have St P ask me what I've done with my life and only be able to say I had a tidy house.

Pax Blod.
I was of course "fishing".
As a younger man I played rugby for a team on the outskirts of West London (Sudbury) Their "A" team seemed to be the place for ex pats from the other home countries. This was the time when it was a good game if England only lost in single figures. You can imagine the comments, from your countrymen. Thanks to me "Mammy" I was never short of a word or two. I soon discovered that discussing the Union Flag had the desired affect. This applied to those from North of the border too! Albeit sometimes with an explosive result!!
