Just wondered if anyone has ever had acupuncture as a treatment for any kind of arthritis? I saw my physio today and had my 1st session.

My Mum had Acupuncture for her knees many years ago. Relief was pretty quick, and she hasn't suffered with the problem since then. She was also treated for a heel problem, which required only one session. Wonderful. Hope it works well for you, and why shouldn't it?

I hope it works well for your LNG. I've heard very positive things about acupuncture generally and think that it must be worth trying something that doesn't involve taking more medicines.

Thanks WT for sharing the info about Mum. I don't know anyone who's had acupuncture. FB the session lasted about 1hour, quite a bit of that was spent talking as it was a 1st visit.I went expecting to be given exercises from the physio to help my pain and mobility and I did'nt pay anything for any of it as it was all done by a physio in the hospital. She's done extra training to do acupuncture as well. I am still taking pain relief Plocket, she says not to stop at the moment. I have to say my neck is a lot freer (sp) this morning and my fingers don't feel as stiff. Back and knees are about the same. Will keep ypu all posted as to how I do. I think she said the plan is to have 3 sessions. I think after that she will give me movements/exercises to do.

I've heard some amazing things about acupuncture, LNG , but could never try it myself due to my phobia of needles/injections!

The second time my Mother had it done, she went to a Chinese practitioner. I sat in with her. As you say LNG, there were a lot of questions. I found them fascinating. At one point he said that she had given birth 3 times. I thought that was a mistake, as there was only my brother and me. Some time later, I found out that Mum had had another baby when she was 17. Back in those days, she was forced to give him away to an Aunt. He was a big part of our family. So the Acupuncturist had been correct.

I had acupuncture last year for back pain caused by a prolapsed disc. My physio offered me the opportunity if I was ok about needles. I had about 5 sessions (I was open to anything at the time if it might help) and the results were amazing. I don't know if my back was settling down anyway, because although prolapsed disc don't repair themselves (on the whole) the pain does diminish, or if it was the acupuncture. Mine was free on the NHS so I know I was very lucky! Good luck with your acupuncture - living in pain is a complete pain.

N.O. honestly on a pain scale of 1-10 having the needles stuck in was less than 1. I hardly felt a thing. Gosh WT that sent a shiver down my spine. It's amazing what people had to do years ago. That's a familiar story about your Mum, it seems to have happened a fair bit in those days. Jasmine, I'm happy your acupuncture worked so well for you. Hope all is well with you now. Thank you for the wishes.

I hope it gives you some relief LNG.I had 6 sessions a couple of years ago .My physio gave them to me for my knee. I have a torn cartlidge in one and i am in the minoruty here but it didnt help me at all. Everyones differant and has differant forms of pain but the only option for me is an op and they wont do it because i have a serious blood condition and they say its to much of a risk. That may be the NHS giving me an excuse i dont know but i will go private one day when i can afford it. Good luck with yours and i realy hope it helps because there is nothing worse than living with constant pain i should know and its not funny

I would agree with the 1 for the pain of the needles going in LNG. The only slightly unpleasant bit was the needles that were put in my hand in between my thumb and first finger. Did you have needles put there?

Thank you S. O. I'm sorry your experience did'nt help you. Have you tried other alternative/complementary therapies.? Yes Jasmine I did and behind my knee and on the top of my foot. 6 in total for this 1st time. I've no idea if they put more in further appointments or just stick to those ones.

When you're in pain, anything is worth a try. I tried all sorts of things for Migraine. The cure was the menopause, so I had a long wait. ;D Oh, and pregnancy

Migraine can definately be related to hormones WT that's for sure. Glad to hear you don't suffer with them any more. . I think a lot of people don't understand how awful they are.

Hi LNG
A number of years ago, I had quite a bad whiplash injury, which took quite alot of Physio sessions to sort out. Towards the end of my Physio the therapist asked if I would like to try acupuncture. As my only problem with needles is I prefer to watch them go in, I agreed. The acupuncture worked really well for me, not only as a pain relief, but I also felt less lethargic afterwards.
I think though that acupuncture is like any treatment or medicine, not everything works for everyone, but I hope it really helps you.

Thank you bagpuss, I am more hopeful having had a chat with people about it all and hearing everyone's opinion. I'm glad to hear it worked well for you too. We see time and time again that some things work for some people and not for others but nothing beats a try.

Hi LNG. It is the only form of pain relief I can have. I have fibromyalgia & ME. I had acupuncture several years ago before I knew what the problem was. I had 6 sessions over a 3month period & I was pain free for about 2 years. I now recognise the symptoms & as soon as they appear I book an appointment & it is sorted. I pay £30 but can claim half back as we are in the HSA. My man is a GP of many years standing. I asked why he took it up, & it was because he found it frustrating that there were patients like me, & people with migraines & the like who he couldn't treat. To keep on top of it I now see him monthly. He also treats patients in a hospice within a hospital. HTH Janet.

Hi Grannyjanny, I'm happy to hear it works for you, thankfully there are alternatives to conventional therapies which you have access to. It's definately worth you going monthly if you get some relief. I had my 2nd session today, lasted 20 mins or so and had 2 extra needles put in. I'm actually really sore and stiff today, did'nt sleep well last night but hopefully will feel better as the day goes on. Back on friday for more.

Don't be disheartened, things can get worse before they get better after a treatment, it's happened to me on more than one occasion. I would certainly recommend acupuncture, it's worked wonders for me. ;D

Thanks for the support woobats. Did'nt know things could get worse. I slept for over 2 hours this afternoon, unheard of for me. Sleep is a good healer too I think.

I'm sorry I didn't mean the condition would get worse, only that the pain or discomfort can get worse for an hour of so after treatment. This is not always the case, most of the time the relief is all but instant.

No no I know you did'nt mean worse overall but worse after treatment for a short time. I did know what you ment and it was good to know that this can happen but the treatment will still work. ;D

I have to say that weeks on I do think acupuncture does help. It's not until I stopped it that I've really noticed. If you know what I mean. I've not had any for nearly 2 weeks and from the weekend past I've been really sore again. The only thing different in my life is that I've not had any acupuncture. I'm off to physio later today and hopefully will have another session. It will be interesting to see if it eases again.
