Now that my old TV has died I must look at buying a new one But there's soooo many to choose from!! I suppose it's time to go LCD/Digital, wide/flat screen, but my mind is boggled by the choice , and makers I've never heard of I'm looking for 19 or 20 inch, hopefully under £200. Anyone bought a new one lately? Got one, or a particular maker to recommend? (or avoid like the plague!) Got any horror stories? Will have to get a new (booster) aerial too, to get digital here , but, at last I will be able to see what Channel 5 is like! All advice gratefully received

Believe it or not, I have only ever had little portable TVs. No matter the size of house, I have always watched TV in a small room. Huge TVs are a real treat, feel like I'm at the Cinema. But I had always bought Sony, till I bought a Hitachi in Tesco last year. I have no horror stories. I know what you mean though about unheard of brands.

Always was a greedy cow FB! ;D ;D ;D Don't think I fancy a 26-incher though! ;D Is that Thompson a normal old-style telly or a LCD-flat-screen mega modern one? Thompson, there's another name I've not heard of (I hope they're nothing to do with Thompson & Morgan!!!) Most of the ones I've been looking at have the Digital incorporated inside them.

We recently bought a LG flat screen tv 32" screen. Its very nice and not too big. Very happy with it. I seem to think it was about £400.00 so the smaller ones should be in your price bracket. You could do worse than Tesco's (much as I hate to admit it!) They do have some very good deals on TV's Or try Dixons .. had a look in there when our big telly went up in smoke and they had either really great big uns or one just a bit too small (we have a cabinet our telly dontchaknow and it had to fit cos I like to hide the telly away when its not on !!) They will usually do a good deal if you have the cheek to ask for one ;D

Not an option Barbara. I MUST have the telly on at all times, even if I'm not watching it (and I DO watch it a LOT!!) It's my comfort blanket Cannot fall asleep if the telly is not on, and it has to stay on!! Tried those sleep timers and the second it switches off I wake up! Currently sleeping on the sofa cos bedroom telly is downstairs ;D I am currently trying to find a good deal on a Goodmans TV. Not the cheapest out there but my Goodmans portable has been a long-time faithful friend (Prob shouldn't've said that tempting fate)

Another question for anyone who knows anything about tellies If I buy one of these modern LCD TVs, and have Digital/Freeview and all that jazz, can I still connect my old VHS Video machine to it??

How about this dual purpose computer monitor and TV from Play.com, NO?...... www.play.com/Electronics/Electronics/4-/3385383/-/Product.html?searchstring=LGAt £169.99 including free delivery it certainly suits your budget. I have no experience of LG televisions but I do know that their LCD computer monitors are very reliable as the computer guys at both my current and previous jobs always recommended them. As a result we have them throughout the office at work now. PS: As I understand it, you cannot record digital i.e. Freeview programmes unless you also have a digital video recorder. Of course I may be proved wrong, but neither conventional video in our house will record the Freeview channels.

After perusing squillions of reviews on various makes, and a sudden input of dosh from my mum's will (thanks Mum ) I upped my budget and decided that Sony was the way to go Having recently discovered the delights (I hope!) of Ebay, I finally bought a 20" Sony widescreen LCD with integrated Freeview for £243.99 (talked them down from £249.99 and high st price is £399) Also, while I was at it, I got a Toshiba VCR/DVD recorder for £70 (they wanted £84.99 and shop price was about £130) Both are new but returned unused, grade A condition and have warranty, from a highly recommended supplier. Not been delivered yet. Now have to fork out for a digital aerial as well! ;D

Oh WOW!!! What an amazing piece of kit!!! Why was I worried about setting it up?? It does everything for you!! Once I'd got my head around the remote (which, to be fair, is incredibly simplified for such a complicated machine. Got nice big buttons too!), it just sorted itself out! Only got the 4 terrestrial channels cos not got a digital aerial yet, and didn't install the new Video/DVD recorder. I'll wait till I've got the new aerial and let it tune itself in again The picture and sound quality is fabulous! I am sooo pleased with it! For anyone interested, it is a 20" Sony Bravia 20S3050 (Mocha) also available in black, white, blue, and PINK! @ £249.99 via Ebay (rrp about £399)

Whoooo-hoooo!!! have now discovered that it HAS picked up all the Freeview channels and I don't need to fork out for a digital aerial!! (yet!) That naughty man in my local TV shop who told me, 2 years ago, that I would not get reception, where I live, on a Freeview box without a special booster aerial (supplied via him ), was telling me lies!! for him!! ;D

Result NO - glad something has gone right for you Digital signals have improved over the past two years in terms of coverage, and hopefully they will continue to do so, cos I still get break-up when a motor bike goes past our house despite having a digital aerial x Tig

It does depend on local signal strength NO but your local man should know what the local reception is like so maybe he was chancing his arm.
Certainly when we got our first Freeview box the reception was not brilliant until we had a new aerial fitted, even though we already had a signal booster. The old aerial was 13 years old though so we probably needed a new one anyway.

When I was looking at reviews for the TVs I was considering, quite a few people said the integral Freeview was a bit dodgy Except for Sony, who generally got thumbs-up all round I'm glad I spent the extra dosh for Sony, well worth it!

Glad you got a good TV N.O - I am happy with all the freeview channels and dont see any need to get SKY Last night I pressed, for some strange reason, the wrong button on my remote and I changed all the titles and instructions to TURKISH Got out the 500 page manual and after searching for the right page managed with great difficulty to put it back to ENGLISH
