Can anyone shed any light on why I get so much of the green long stranded weed on my waterfall and in the pond. I seem to be clearing it out twice a week. Anything that I have planted in the pond has ended up being strangled by the stuff and now there are no plants apart from a miniture water lily which seems to be OK. CJ

CJ It's a case of getting the balance right CJ, you need far more plants in your pond to compete with the blanket weed for nutrients, rather than use chemicals. I've just read that you have taken lots of plants out of your pond, which is why the blanket weed has taken over. What plants did you remove? It would have probably been best to thin them out rather than remove them completely. - gardenworld.proboards103.com/index.cgi?board=water&action=display&thread=5723

I had a really bad infestation of blanket weed in the spring, but as soon as all my plants grew up and shaded the pond it all disappeared with no treatment So plants are the answer CJ. I find flag irises the best cos some light still gets filtered through, and the tall sword-like leaves are a feature on their own when the lovely yellow flowers have gone
