I have recently discovered that
1. I adore pomegranates, especially if they've been chilled in the fridge. I'd never eaten one until 3 or 4 weeks ago.
2. I love blue cheese (I've always hated it up until now but I've been turned onto it by some cheese made by a friend - Suffolk Blue). I've now tried several blue cheses and like them all, especially the Belvoir Blue I had at a friends party and the blue stilton I grated over some portobello mushroom with tea the other night.
3. I really like getting caught in the rain, especially if I'm out on my bike. I've always avoided it but I just love it.
4. I really enjoy cooking food, expecially if some or all of it is homegrown (I've always done the growng bit and left the cooking bit to Mrs FA). I made some home-made burgers on Saturday and we had them in buns with homegrown lettuce & tomatoes and we also had some potato wedges made out of some of the pentland Javelin's from my plot. It was delicious and I now want to do so much more !
Anyone else recently found out stuff they like after a lifetime of not knowing ?

I have been on a mission for me and OH to taste as much as possible before we depart the planet! My Mum was very conservative in her approach to food and I was told from an early age what I would like, and what I wouldn't I too have discovered that I like some blue cheese, but not all (Gorgonzola is still YUK!) but Stilton is fine, also soft cheese, I like Brie Tried lots of exotic fruits - Sharon fruit, star fruit ;D, Dragon fruit and papaya not to my taste! Always love pomegranates tho' And I've discovered a liking for exotic plants and less common veg since I've been on here - hence all the new stuff I'm trying to grow x Tig

Am a bit scared of trying new stuff and I have never had pomegranates - am sure I would hate them all that slime inside and those seeds - but they are supposed to be so good for you Discovered YouTube a while ago - thanks to PJ - and enjoy many an hour surfing the videos people post - the other night watched some of What's My Line - I can watch all my fav composers Albeniz, Chopin and the wonderful pianist Radu Lupu - without YouTube would not be able to do this

I just discovered, after a life time of steering clear of all things spicy (I don't like hot stuff - chilli, curry, ginger) that PAPRIKA is gorgeous!! I'm chucking on all sorts of things! ;D I always thought it was like cayenne pepper, and it's not!!

Did you know that apparently your taste buds change approximately every 7 years Andy? That might explain why you suddenly like things you used to dislike. I've very recently discovered the most divine chocolate on this planet - it's a Biting Back Bar by a company called Chokolit (it's made by a dyslectic lad) The bar is made without using palm oil, which in turn helps to save the Orang-utans. It's GORGEOUS!!! ;D

It's not particularly high in cocoa Nightowl - it's 53.8% minimum. I don't like the 85% dark or heavy stuff like that, although my OH does ;D Anyway if you are interested in trying it they sell it direct from their website which is www.chokolit.co.uk. I read that he's supplying Waitrose and Sainsburys but I haven't seen it on the shelves yet, despite looking! Just so you know, and in case you don't like orange, he uses essential orange oil in this particular chocolate bar so it does have a very faint orange flavour.

I had my food epiphany quite a few years back. I always used to say "I don't like it" when I've never even tried it. I also had the same thing with my musical tastes.
I did discover today that I'm really looking forward to having a fortnight off to get away from the plonker I'm currently working with.

Did you know that apparently your taste buds change approximately every 7 years Andy? That might explain why you suddenly like things you used to dislike. Well I never knew that P ! Maybe that explains why I used to think olives were turds of the devil and now I can't eat enough of them. I love them, especially pitted and stuffed with chili peppers or sun-dried tomatoes. That's another recent discovery. Mind you, there's still a way to go before my taste buds will ever think liver or kidney are nice ;D FA x

I agree with you about liver or kidney Andy - I'd run a mile from a dish made from them!!! Mmmm olives are scrummy! I think they are quite a mature taste though - I only decided I liked them as an adult. Sun-blushed/dried tomatoes too. I love Mediterranian flavours Actually come to think of it I used to loathe garlic - now I eat so much of it I can barely taste it! ;D

There's a tale though FA. My dad loved it too. He used to offer me sixpence (bribe really) to dare me to eat cockles, winkles etc. As a child I thought they looked awful and smelled horrible. But that sixpence was awfully tempting. He used to have tears streaming down his face whilst he watched mine pull the most awful grimaces. Wonder why I loved him so?

I've recently found that I STILL hate blue cheese (I try it every now and again to find out if I like it now) but I do like Brie and Camembert, which I used to hate (only eaten them in France tho' so still may not like them here).
I've also recently discovered that I am quite good at Art and I love it! (would hardly love it if I was cr*p at it I s'pose).
I have also found that I love retirement although I'm not drawing my pension for a long while yet so it may only be a relatively short retirement, specially as OH tells me he is running out of work (he's a builder). I'm not ready to take another job yet tho'. I only left work 3 weeks ago!!!
PS. I've always liked pomegranates. My Dad used to have one every Christmas and he used to eat a bit at a time and leave it on the side. Well.....what's a girl to do? And they're not slimy at all!

Do try a proper mature Shropshire Blue Cheese. It should be pale orange/yellow not white and it is superb. BUT if you ever ever get the chance try the rarest of cheeses, a Blue Wensleydale, now that is to die for. Getting too old for discoveries.

Agree with you there Plocket and I hate the thought of the poor lobsters and other sea foods being plunged into boiling water, ALIVE
Apparently you keep them alive until the last minute so they are fresh - dreadful

Too many food practices are cruel so it's not the boiling alive that really bothers me - I can't really explain it but it just isn't right to pick things out of it's own shell!!

Oh and I realised earlier that I've not got as sweet a tooth as I had when I was younger.
I used to pile sugar on my cereal and have my cordial etc fairly strong. Makes me feel sick now if I have too much. I still don't like too much salt though. And I like pepper. I never used to eat much veg but I'll now eat most of it (most of it only if I have to though) and prefer to juice it.
