My nan gave me my gramp's old diaries from 1984 to 1988 which I have just started reading. Oh my, I knew he was into his garden but never realised just how much he did (I wasn't that into gardening back then!) He wrote most days about what he'd planted. sowed, pricked out, weeded etc. He was recording the temperature (I think in the greenhouse) and it was down to -10 at one point early 1985! Reading them now I can see him, in his shorts in the summer, all tanned and pottering about in his garden with the masses and masses of flowers, strawberries and veg. Makes me miss him loads Does anyone else keep a plant diary like this? If so I recommend you keep it as you never know it might be your family reading it back 20 years later Jardack xx

Hi JD I kept a record of everything that I did last year but this year I have not had the time. I remember 1985 as I was pregnant with my daughter and the Temp around here got to minus 15 but it didn't feel that cold as it went on for weeks, all the trees has a frozen coat and they looked so nice. Glad your enjoying reading about your GF gardening.

I bet they are a facinating read JD, how lovely of your Nan to have kept them and to give them to you, I bet your Gramp would be pleased you've got them too. I don't keep a diary but your story sure makes you want to.

In some ways my gardening diary is on here these days It is lovely to be able to read back and find out what was important enough to make note of though, something to be treasured, and helpful to boot! x Tig

Yes I keep a Diary on the PC - in Word - I can paste photos in from my garden, holidays etc etc - I dont think I could be bothered to actually "write" in a diary every day - the computer makes it so easy I started it in 2006 and I start a new one each year

Carolann - I know what you mean about finding time, but I am hoping to keep a diary from next year to see how I get on I've asked for the gardeners diary from Lakeland so hope it is nice! Chuckles, my nan read them and had a little weep in remembering then thought I would like to read them Bet he is looking down and watching my efforts! Tig, I tried to keep a record on here with my gardening page but never seem to find the time to get on here often enough! Jennywren, that is a really good idea, especially with the photos. That will make fascinating reading in years to come. Don't forget to back it up tho so you don't lose it Jardack

It's a great thing to have done isn't it Jardack and so interesting when passed down the family - at least to someone who will care for it/them, like you I started diary keeping when I was about 11 years old and have done so since. Although I'm very inconsistent and dont have one on the go at the moment

Jardack, I am really quite envious What a lovely thing to have. Though 1985 seems really quite recent to me. And you are right. what may seem incidental to us, could be of great interest to future generations. I'm going to try to keep a diary this year, especially because of starting the veg.

Shrubrose, I used to keep a diary but I threw them out years ago, wish I'd kept them now as they'd be fascinating reading. Do you ever look back at your old ones? WeeT - 1985 isn't that long ago is it Just been reading about how everything in the garden was trashed after the storms in 1987. His poor wooden greenhouse was totally ruined. Jardack

I have done Jardack and also had put them on my pc (which subsequently crashed!!! ). I must be honest, they'd be interesting to no-one but myself ;D And they have given me many a chuckle, as well as the odd tear.

Kept a daily diary from 1983 until about 2000 which plots everything i did in the parks, weather details when things were in leaf and flower etc etc.
Trouble is, they're all in my dads loft so i never get to read them !!!
I do keep a diary at work now but it's not very comprehensive....only what i've done and any recordable incidents such as vandalism or my manager visiting.

Shrubrose - you would be surprised who is interested in them I bet that one day they will be great to look back on (assuming the PC doesn't crash again and lose them all) Andy - you'll have to go and sit in the loft and have a read of them Jardack
