I sowed a packet of wild flower seeds in a pot, and this beautiful flower is amongst the cornflowers etc that have come up. Does anyone have any ideas what it might be please? View of the back of the flower (from the side).

Well my first thought was Aquilegia (columbine) but it's the wrong time of the year and I don't think the leaves are right. I can't get over those long tubes on the back. There's nothing else like it in my wildflower book. Hope someone else can help as I'd be interested to know!!

The only other flower that I can find in my books which is vaguely similar is Butterwort (pinguicula)? It is difficult to see with all the other plants around if the flower is growing from a central cluster of leaves Bagpuss?

I think it's a Columbine too, it's perfectly possible for it to be flowering now. I don't think it's a Butterwort, Tig, the flowers don't look quite right but I am fairly bad at ID by photo! ;D

If your lovely wild flower springs from a rosette, it is Common Butterwort (Pinguicula vulgaris). If it is upright, branched and softly hairy with leaves similar to love-in-a-mist, then it is annual Larkspur (Consolida ambigua): plant is very poisonous; unfortunately the most beautiful ones usually are. Enjoy it, nevertheless.

There are some good pictures of Common Butterwort on here Bagpuss. Not the Larkspur (Consolida ambigua) though. www.floralimages.co.uk/ppinguvulga3.htmI quite like this site it does common and latin names and shows pics of parts of the plant and you can look at what the latin names mean too and and and

Many thanks all for your help. The leaves are sort of similar to love in the mist - so it must be a larkspur.
I have a representative from the local Wild Life Trust coming round to look at my garden on Friday afternoon, so that it can be judged under the "Gardening for Wildlife" scheme which is run by the local council and Wild Life Trust. So at least I can point it out. I'm hoping to go one better than last year if I can (I got silver last year).
