Everyone i speak to at the moment seems to be feeling constantly tired...including myself. I seem to be constantly knackered with no "ooomph" or get up and go....if i can avoid doing things, i won't do it. I work longer hours in the summer so that's not helping and i'm a few stone over weight so there's another factor. I also get up at 4.30 am....including weekends as that is what my body clock is set to. Hot or crap weather doesn't help either and makes me feel sluggish But there's other people who i speak to....thin, easy going types who have nice jobs and sensible waking hours. Even our 17 year old Chinese student is always tired. One thing i do contribute a lot of it to is diet. Big carb based diets with lots of sugary stuff really ain't helping. I tried the Atkins diet once and i felt great. Anyone else feel like this ?...it's driving me mad. Or...could MI5, MI6, MFI or anyone else be secretly poisoning us by pumping "tired gas" into the air or water supply

When I was in my early forties, I always nodded off on the settee in the afternoon. But Andy, I am always tired, I usually have to force myself to do everything, and I am constantly saying to myself "I'd better get on" I think I eat really healthily, everything fresh, loads of nuts and seeds ('fodder' as my Mother calls it), fruit and veg. And I sleep really well too, over 8 hours no problem. I have nightmares though. I was put on Thyroxine a few years ago, that has helped a bit. Then I tell myself that perhaps I do too much heavy work, and that I'm about to be 60.

I think it's more lifestyle than medical in my case. I'm going to try to cut out all the crap carbs such as pasta, potatoes and white bread. Might have to think about cutting the beer out too I need to lose a few stone too so that would help although that's easier said than done. Any tips ?

I know exactly how you feel Andy. I started a new job just over seven weeks ago and I still seem to have loads to take in. It doesn't help that they want me to learn what everyone does so that I can cover in all departments. It's also the first job I've had where coming home for lunch isn't at all practical and and that inevitably means sandwiches at the desk which is not ideal I suppose. As a result I tend to find that when I get home from work, all I can be bothered to do is to water the greenhouses/garden and if I am not online, I am usually asleep. I could also happily do with losing a couple of stone, or growing another six inches! ;D When I went to the gym and swam three times a week five years ago, I was never more than 15 stone. Now I don't exercise at all and am never less than 16.5 stone. Fortunately I am 6ft 2" but the spare tyre is what spoils the outline. I think it is really a lack of exercise as I don't recall feeling like this when I was fitter. Then again, there are a number of issues ongoing at the moment which don't help the situation.

Are you telling me that you sleep in the daytime,at your age Jas,thats only for us old wrinklys, ;D I'm terrible in the school holidays FB if I stop and sit down! I remember having a doze when I was looking after a friends little girl and I woke up to find her face really close to mine and she said 'Oh, you're awake now!' Another friend gave up bread, rice, pasta (all carbs in fact) and has lost so much weight it is unbelievable. He also feels 100% better in himself.

I'm 54, I wake up between 05:15 and 05:45 every day, work from 07:00 - 15:30 5 days a week. My job can be rather stressful. I sleep a lot over the weekend, loads of naps on the sofa. I also have a kip most days in the early evening and I'm usually in bed by 22:00 at the latest. I have been using the Atkins method of weight loss for years to contol/loose weight, although not as extreme, and usually feel OK, I am not particularly over weight but would love to be half a stone or more slimmer. I avoid heavy carbs and sugar like the plague. the more carbs I eat the worse I feel, bloated and sluggish. Unchecked I would be at least two stone heavier, so have a constant battle with my weight. I eat lots of veg and berries, nuts and seeds, lean meat, I try to keep fat to a minimum. I cook all my food from scratch and avoid ready meals from the super market, and I do enjoy the odd glass or three of wine. The wet cold weather slows me down, I always feel better when the sun shines. I would love to have more energy, but where oh where do I get some from? ;D

thinking back to an earlier thread Andy, the one about the extra mortgage, you may have been under some stress and maybe the hassle has worn you down a bit.

I usually feel tired but put it down to the fact that I usually sleep very badly (waking properly four or five times is normal for me and I struggle to get back to sleep). However I'm especially tired at the moment because we've had lots of very late nights (after midnight) and early mornings (before 7.00am) over the last four nights. So that's my fault!! ;D

It might of done Beanie but we've taken in a student and that has really helped and just given us some spare cash to spend on the house or for a holiday. It also doesn't help with my step kids....two daughters aged 18 and 19 who still think that everything should be handed to them on a plate. If they have a problem, my wife will drop everything and sort it out regardless of the cost or consequences....and that really drives me up the wall as they both smoke and both party almost every night.

People tell that exercise boosts seratonin levels in the brain and makes you feel more awake, but apart from gardening I think exercise is bad for people of my mature age - I'd probably hurt myself Probably be OK for you Andy, though I would have thought you get plenty of exercise in your job? I don't seem to need as much sleep as I used to, head hits the pillow after midnight up at 7am most mornings - but I don't have a job these days and therefore probably don't notice if I am a bit tired Good to know I can blame MFI though, rather than age ;D

Well I was on a fruit juice detox thing and felt really really good on it. Didn't feel tired at all, even with being on the 5am shift.
I find I get tired around, erm, "certain" times of the month (tmi, I know) but apart from that, it's mainly just the shifts I work and now that I'm used to them, it doesn't really bother me anymore.

I had a 'senior' moment and should add - that hot weather makes me tired - as I am a Northern girl of origin ;D Never got used to hot nights - always sleep better when I am snuggled up! Biggles I will look forward to the day that I can stuff my face and still be slim (if I can remember when I could last class myself as slim, probably about 1980) - other than in a virtual world of course where I am like a stick insect with bumps x Tig

Well erm I never feel tired normally but do get the odd Sluggish day - a banana usually perks me up ;D
I get up around 5.30-6 am each day and work right thru until around 9pm - doing something
2nite got a pile of ironing, then some wages to type up and then dog walking - usually finish for the day around 9pm - so no time to feel tired I spose
I tend to go to bed around 10 - 11pm and either read, watch tv or listen to the radio
I do sometimes have a power nap at lunchtime lasting about 5 mins - perfick
But if I have a glass of wine or a B & C the night before then the next day I am lethargic and good for nothing Zzzzzzzz
