Sorry, no pic, but unfortunately one of my pots of runner beans got a bad caes of blackfly and since I could see numerous ladybirds on there as well, I decided to let it go as I had another pot on the go which has not been affected at all. Was looking last night and noticed that there was no sign of the ladybirds, but there was a lot of another sort of bug on there which had black and red spotting on it but had a spiky back instead. Anyone got an idea what they are, and should I be concerned? Can't say I've come across them before. EDIT - scrap that, seems I have a good colony of Ladybird larva on the runner beans; www.kidcyber.com.au/topics/ladybird.htm

That was a good bit of detective work on your part DG. A child at school bought some ladybirds and their larva into school just before we broke up and I didn't put 2 and 2 together when I read your post! ;D

I had a suspicion they were Ladybirds of some sort, but they just look so different to the cute little red and black ones you normally see. Quite scary actually, in a 'would be scary if they were the size of a dog' kinda way. Now I've just got to make sure I can keep them in the garden. I've been laying off the chemicals a bit more this year so hopefully, if they decide to stay they can do a lot of the work for me.

They certainly don't get many of their looks from their parents initially! ;D

They sure don't and there are hoverfly larvae that are equally spiky backed ugly. Those are the good guys as well as they too munch through the greenfly.
