I have the dubious privilege of having the use of a company mobile phone for the next week, and I just wondered who it was that designed this particular device, given that they keypad seems to be more suited to a small child. I realise that miniaturisation is the vogue these days but surely if this renders the device difficult if not impossible to use, what is the point. On this particular phone, my thumb comfortably covers the whole number pad, so that is going to be interesting isn't it? All I need is the ability to make phone calls. I have a digital camera already, there is no need for the phone to do that. If they didn't try to cram so many useless features into these devices, it might just allow a bit more room for the essentials, such as the ability to use the keypad without pressing all of the numbers at once!

I said I would never have a mobile phone, but last Saturday, the man whose garden I do gave me his because he couldn't see it properly. He had only used it three times. So it even has nearly £20 of credit on it. Still don't like them. But I have used it Once.

Oh what fun Spru, something new to learn how to use I don't know anyone who uses their thumb though - the phone numbers you need to use most should be stored on the sim in contacts, and you can 'hot key' them ;D Maybe you will get used to it by next Friday

I should say that although like WT I don't like them, I have used one before. That one whilst also a Nokia was just a phone though not an electronic Swiss Army knife! Yes I do have important numbers pre-programmed, and the only thing I have no idea how to do is to send texts but that won't be the end of the world.

I'm not a fan either Spru. The OH has been on at me for years to have one, I suppose as the children get a bit older and I start venturing farther afield with them, it is practical in this day and age [seeing as I don't have AA cover on my little car! ] To be able to call someone in an emergency is a bonus. But when I got my current phone, [the only one that hasn't ended up in the kids toybox after a month], it came with £30 free texts and calls. That was about 3-4 months ago. I've still got over £25 of credit! OH would tell you a different story though. He's all up for the all singing and dancing models. But he has got big hands. ;D

I wouldn't like to be without one now, just in case, but £10 credit usually lasts me about 3 months Spru, can't you use a pencil top or a thin stick (like a wooden skewer) to tap the numbers or words in?

After working with computers for years I decided that I would never have a PC at home - I have 3 in the house at the moment, 2 digital cameras, 2 mobiles, telephone, answering machine. My problem isn't my fingers - I text using both thumbs, my problem is my eyes - I am useless without my glasses these days....small print on a silver background.....
Spru - texting is fun - it is lovely to know that someone is thinking about you....when you get one, just press reply (is it reply? - my mobiles are in German) and start..erm ..replying!!
I will give you the chance to try it out....hehehe!!

Predictive text - what goes on in its head sometimes? How come it's happy to accept something that looks like a Polish surname without asking you to spell it out , but often doesn't recognise fairly common words and makes you spell it!

I've never really had that problem with predictive text on my mobiles. I only have to spell the swear words ;D

My family up-dated my mobile from the basic Nokia to a fancy slim-line one with all the features on it (Camera/ etc) for my last birthday but I still prefer the Basic one I had. It drives my OH mad when the 'bleeps' go to let me know there is a message or incoming call coming through. I cant fathom out how to put it on Silent ;D I use my thumb to txt with--

Oh yes those silly little buttons Spru ;D I have to be able to feel them click so it's really fun when I need a new moblile. Bet you use one finger on the pc keyboard too ;D Screen and text size is a problem for me too RF, can't see a thing without me specs. Why do they all glare so much too, can't see even with me specs on if I'm outside in the sun I use predictive text and save all my swear words and abrev words in the phone. Don't really use mine much these days, used it a lot when I was at work though. Mmmm all fingers and thumbs with the MP3 player I've just bought small controls or what and it has some of those touch ones too. I thought it was faulty at first because it kept doing things on it's own then I read the manual and found it also had a hold button

I was in the 'don't like' camp for ages until sitting on a train which had stopped for some reason and realised that if I had a mobile 'phone I could ring the friend who was waiting for me at London Bridge. Gave in and got one and then started on text (still hate turning the word text into a verb ). Now I am hooked. It was lovely to be able to keep in touch with the FD when he was in SA and to get a text from my friend when he'd finished. She was able to send me a text as each one of our little group finished. Can't do all the fancy stuff and totally failed to send a photo to my brother at Christmas, but I can do the basics now. Agree that they try to cram too much on - don't need camera really, but I guess for some folk that's the attraction. If you grow your finger nails Spru you can play the guitar as well!

Must admit that I held out for a long time until we were on the road to visit the eldest and got stuck in a traffic jamb. Renown for our always being too early to suddenly not turning up put eldest in a panic and we got well and truly told off on our arrival. Next day SIL ordered a Nokia and that was that....... Don't grow your nails on both hands Spru - only right - hell of a job playing chords with long fingernails... RF
