I have one of these in the garden growing up a trellis and was wondering if i cut it too ground level in the autumn would it throw newshoots up in the spring or shall i cut it back in the spring . Its very fast growing and about 4 yrs old and i remember planting it fairly deep originally Cheerz

Cutting it that far back is probably too much for it Steve. Ideally you should cut back some of the plant and leave some of the stems. You can cut it back any time really although spring would be best. Remember that when you cut it back you'll lose flowers the following season.

The reasons i want to cut it back are 1. Over the years it has built up layers and is about 2ft out from the trellis and i would like to retrain it and 2. It has only top growth and bare stems from about 5 ft above the ground. I have under planted it but im not happy with it

Thanks Plocket I grow it to block the view from one of the neighbours so loosing flowers isnt really a concern. i just dont want to kill it

Well in that case I would suggest that you cut back the stems trying to leave a few leaves on the ends of each one. I don't actually grow an Armandii so can't speak from experience - I wouldn't know how it would respond to being cut back to the base - it might be absolutely fine
