i have had a pot of them outside the back door all summer, they have been lovely, they are just going to seed, i have taken some pods and put them in an envelope, but can i put some seeds in a pot? and do they need to be kept inside if i do, or are they hardy, i can ask the same for pansys as well really barbara

I would sow them now, Barbara, outside but with some protection - a cold frame or similar - just so you can keep the microclimate fairly stable. I think they will germinate fairly quickly but I don't know what will come up - they might not come true from seed but it will be fun finding out! ;D

Barbara, I sowed some pansies the other week in the mini greenhouse and they've germinated.

These were planted in September last year and have been out ever since, they do appear to be tough and pretty

There are lots of different species of Viola as well as the ones normally grown, Viola tricolor. I have Vv.cornuta, c.alba, c.minor alba corsica, dubyana, jooii and fletti (possibly) and various tpes of sororia. Then if you really want scent try V. odorata. All are dead easy from seed, indeed too easy for some of them!

Those are really lovely mowhay BP why don't mine ever look that good? I think they are lovely and the blue/purple ones are really something - never seen ones like that before. RF
