I have been a bit naughty and bought loads of these this year They have been a bit battered about by the wind and rain this "summer" ( haven't we all?) and I need to know whether I can cut them back when I tidy the borders next month. Thanks

I usually leave my perennial Wallflowers till the Spring, though I do tidy the plants up at this time of year, and take cuttings too. But then, the weather isn't so good up here. On the whole, I haven't found that they like to be cut right back at any time. Though I'd be interested to know how they are treated elsewhere in the country.

I have the mauve perenial wallflower, cant remember the name of it. I took cuttings from a mother plant which has now died and it's a little shrub by itself now I'm happy to say. I just cut it when it becomes untidy no matter what time of year it is.

My Bowles Mauve I tend to cut back quite well (not too hard, like you would a lavender) each time I deadhead so it's not hit all at once and there are still flowering stems on it. Not just the flowering stem but back a fair bit, sort of selective semi pruning I suppose. And I take cuttings a couple of times a year. They do die after a while naturally, run out of steam I think after all that flowering and you can always find a home for these plants!! The euphorbias I take the flowered stem back to the crown and usually leave the rest but I did take a wulfenii totally right back in the spring to move it and it looks quite good now. Yes I made cuttings of the cuttings and I have a few more now ;D You could always take out the worst hit and wait for the new shoots before taking out the rest if you are a bit worried. And don't forget to watch the sap!!
