Hi I have just had a builder round and I am hoping to realise 2 gardening dreams of mine : 1. A larger, wooden greenhouse ( 12' by 8') 2. A purpose built Alpine house ( 6' by either 8 or 10') I am so excited!!! I have a green aluminium greenhouse (6' by 10') and it has been fine but I want to expand that side of my gardening - only trouble is....I don't know what to grow in summer!! At present I use the greenhouse ( unheated) for seeds, cuttings and overwintering - it is empty during the summer. If I had one side as a soil bed could you please advise me what I could grow - plus what would grow in pots on a bench during summer? Thanks

No worries Auricula!!! Time will out!! You wait and see, there is no such thing as a vacuum in nature.
My bare benches this summer have had all the baby succulents I picked up and quite a few scented geraniums. And then there is the chilis and peppers and babies I want on a bit before winter..........

Try growing some summer flowering pot plants such as coleous or gloxinnias. Cyclamen, pansies, polys, bellis and other winter flowering plants can be sown in early aug. What about having a small propagation section with undersoil heating or even mist lots of semi ripe shrub cuttings to take You could always pot up some bedding plants and bring them into the house for a few days at a time for decoration. And of course there's plants for cut flowers too. Of course, you could just throw a load of tomatoes in there !!!

Tomatoes, Peppers, Chilli Peppers, Aubergines, Cucumbers, Melons and a host of other things I would grow if I had room! I think you'll find it'll be full all year and you'll need another one before long.

All I can think of right now is how green with envy I am ;D
Would you be heating this new GH overwinter, that would broaden the scope I guess for what you grow and keep in it all year.

I may heat part of the new greenhouse - we don't get frosts so I wouldn't need a large area heated, just a bit for anything really tender.I'm so excited - I keep poring over relevant books and bits from old magazines, hoping something that I haven't thought of growing will leap out at me ;D ;D

Ooo what a lovely thing to have to plan! My dad has a soil bed in his greenhouse and he grows tomatoes and basil. I'd grow peppers!

Sadly I am allergic to all peppers and capsicums! It is quite a problem as I am a vegetarian, and lots of vegetarian foods have peppers added to give flavour and colour Even when ordering a sandwich in a pub I have to remember to say "No peppers on the salad garnish please" Even if they have been on say lettuce and removed the residue still makes me violently ill!! Now, I do like basil though, and it is something I have never grown. Also, what about coriander - I love that. Can that be grown in a greenhouse? I'll definitely try tomatoes I think

The builders start on the 8th Dec and the greenhouse and alpine house are due to be put up the following week - I'm so excited!!!! ;D........and knackered as I have had to help OH clear and dismantle the old greenhouse in one day as we sold it quicker than we thought we would!! Advertised it too cheaply obviously!!

I have judt ordered a new 8X8 greenhouse with toughened glass from a firm in Norfolk - just ver £750.00 including the glass and VAT plus one or two bells and whistles - a louvre window and extra staging. The garden is being re-disned to fit it in - great fun being had by all and much moving of paving slabs etc i think my winter will be busy sorting it all out! ;D

My new greenhouse is now up and running and I'll be putting the rest of my plants back in there over the weekend in preparation for the winter. I don't know whether to insulate it or not - seems a same when it's only been up a week! can't help but smile when i look outside and roll on next spring - i'm sure it'll fill up very quickly!

I am so envious, I just can't find a space that would be suitable for a greenhouse without looking obtrusive :-
What have you put in it so far BB? ;D

The greenhouse is now full of overwintering fuschias geraniums etc. I've also got big pots of potatoes for Xmas and Xanths plus a few trays of cuttings. I hope to sow my sweet pea seeds this weekend as the weather forcast is not good for outside work this weekend, then they'll go in there as well. I didn't realise how many plants i had when they were spread all over the place in the garden, most of the plants are in there now for the winter and there's still a bit of space left over!
