Does anyone have any experience with Ostrich meat. I know that it is very lean and tastes very good apparently, but I am not sure what to do with it.
I have been offered some and I would love to try it but my OH is shuddering already.
Has anyone eaten it, and if so how was it cooked?

I believe the principle is that, although a bird, to treat it as a beef alternative. anything you would do with a steak for example, you could do with ostrich.
I'd be interested in you opinion. Have done buffalo (heavy beef), crocodile (smoked fishy chicken) and kangaroo (steak and kidney) and would like to have a go at ostrich.

Well I have done the buffalo and horse and snake but not ostrich and I do intend getting some Wild Pig which is very big here and I was wondering about venison again but it was a tad strong the last time.
I'll let you know what happens about the ostrich.

How did it go RF? There's a butcher near us that sells it but we've never tried it.

I haven't tried it yet Plocket - it is still looking at me every time I open the freezer... OH has stated that he isn't eating it so I will get him something else and try it myself.....soon...erm really soon!!

Lovely links Plocket - it has certainly given me some ideas and my OH says that he will try it - or a bit of mine he says...if he likes it then I am "Ostrich steakless".
I have decided to do two, just in case, and if he doesn't like it then I can happily eat both of them and not feel guilty as they have very few calories.
What happens if I don't like it, I have no idea......

If you generally like meat I get the impression that you'll most likely enjoy ostrich RF

Hi RF
I have cooked with it, and it was very nice. I bought the ostrich steaks and minced it and made a lasagne with it. Putting it thought a hand-mincer was tough going I might add!
Hope you enjoy it. I'd be interested to hear what you do with it and what you think.

Well finally - I had to freeze the Ostrich steaks that I had bought as my OH was back pedalling wildly.
I decided yesterday that I would have one today no matter what - so I bought OH a pork chop and I had the ostrich steak.
Ooooo yes, yes - wonderful - a beautiful piece of meat - I loved it and will certainly be eating it again. OH watched me until I had swallowed the first bit (probably thought I would need an ambulance) and when I said that it was just like steak he agreed to try a little.
End of story - I had half a chop and he had half the Ostrich steak.
