Well I do have some pots and raised beds without clay soil so will pop them in there - am a bit confused tho if i sow them now in the ground; they will come up soon wont they and die in the frost

Yup but you can put a cloche over them, immitate a GH, or have a good bit of fleece at the ready and rush to the rescue when frost is predicted.

JW you can sow them in toilet roll inners or pots now and put them somewhere where they will get some shelter if you think your heavy clay is too much for them. That's what I did and then planted them into the ground in january. I had a great display this year from my october sown ones. As you know, I live in Northern Ireland and we're not actualy known for our sunny days and warm winters.

You deff get better s p if sown in autumn, rather than spring, why dont you sow a few now,and save some for spring

Why are the SP's better if sown now than in April thats what I want to know

I've done both spring and autumn sowings as a bit of a trial last year JW and found that those sown in autumn are more robust, stronger, less likely to be hit by nasty insects like greenfly and they flower earlier. However their growing season may be extended by soing in early spring, those I sowed this spring are still giving a few flowers. Hope this helps ;D

What if I sow them straight into a large pot....can I leave that outside? Will that be the same as planting them into the ground now? And if we have a wet winter do I still need to water/feed them?

Well MRH,having never grown them in pots,i can only guess,i dont see where growing in pots,is much different from the ground, except that if we had a long dry spell they could dry out without watering,i dont feed till spring, when it starts to warm up

I grew mine in pots last summer MRH but I started them off in 5" pots (5 seeds to a pot) in October and over wintered them in my mini greenhouse. I put them in their big pots in April. I've only tried autumn sowing once (last year) and the flowers were better than any spring planted seeds I have done. I am going to do the same thing this year but I am going to put them in the ground in spring. May have to sleep by them to keep the bunnies away! ;D
