FB, your October sown sweetpeas look as though they are doing really well, do you cover them with fleece or anything when it drops below freezing ? I'm going to learn about growing sweetpeas for cut flowers from a couple of experienced oldies The seeds have been sown and germinated and the 22 m trench has been completed today. I am hearing things about bobbins and laying the plants as they grow no doubt by the end of the crop it will all become clear. I'm still going to have a load rambling over canes on the lottie but isn't it great to try out different ways of growing things ;D

Tig and PJ your sp are doing great. Tig looking at your soil in your pot and the growth of your plants it looks like whatever watering regime you are using is working fine. I'd pinch out the growing tips when you've about 6/8 leaves on them it does'nt really matter just so long as you do it. It may well be that you'll do it more than once depending on how they grow etc... Mine are outside and about the same stage as yours PJ, growing nice and strong.

Ive been trying to resist this thread until now but whilst i was in B+Q today i bought the sweet pea collection containing Air warden/ Beaujolais /Mrs r bolton/ Noel sutton and White ensign. Each pack contains 16 or so seeds.I think i will be doing an FB and sow them directly outside in the ground. What i want to know is whats the best way to support them ?and where to bloody grow them ;D Cheers Steve

;D Oh dear Steve looks like they got you too then. Can one still sow directly outside this time of year? I am still resisting and will sow next year. Support is a problem for later days but they like being tied in to pretty much everything as long as they get enough light and can go up up up.
Haven't you got a boring wall or neighbours you'd rather not see ;D
I noticed a lot of abandoned bycicles lately. They look like perfect frames for climbers.

Yep they got me Dutchy ;D. Ive planted some bamboo Humillis to screen the Troll at the bottom of the garden. I think i will have to dig up part of the lawn near the house maybe to plant them im not sure, far to many to grow in containers. 16 peas in a packet and 5 packets sounds like i will need a fair bit of space if they all grow. Weathers pretty mild here at the mo little bit of frost tonight for the first time

With so many Steve you could afford to plant some now and save some for spring, and you will get an extended flowering period if they all come up! I think FB grows his up a frame made from bamboo canes (like you see runner beans growing up). I grow mine up metal arches.

I went to have a peek with the torch and there is quite a few up. Sorry forgot camera! I'm putting them into the cold frame later as I don't want to molly coddle them too much.
Steve I have some SPs that were from the forum, Halloween Quiz, and I'm saving those for the Spring. These ones in the GH now are a bit of an experiment. I did some years ago in the Autumn and, I guess because I'm on the south coast, I have the problem of them getting away too eagerly and either have to continually chop them or risk a tangled mess. I think next year I will do a sowing straight outside and let them fend for themselves. They're in charge then!
I still have a few of the others left to sow. Hmmm, I wonder if it really is a bit late in the season. I may just poke a few seeds in the ground to see what happens........
