Hello everyone... I wonder if someone can advise me on my butternut squash? We have, had one giant one ( Which was delicious ) but still have quite a few on my plants. They are a good size about the size of large pineapples, so don't want to waste them. They are obviously not ripe yet ( they have pale green stripes on them) The stripes disappeared on the ripe one. I am worried they will spoil in the cold weather. So my question is..... a Can I ripen them off the plant and if so how?? b. Is is ok to eat them when they are not quite ripe? Many thanks for your consideration. ff x

I'd leave them on the plant as long as you can flowersfriend. You can tell when they are ready to pick by looking at the stalk, near the neck, as it starts to wither. If you have to pick them, make sure you leave as much stalk on as you can and leave them somewhere warm and dry till the green stripes have completely disappeared.

Many, many thanks jlottie. I will do as you suggest.... its getting so cold now though, hopefully they will be ok. I'll bring them in when the neck starts to wither. ff x
