Following on from a thread in the general section, if you were given the opportunity to own a nursery, what do you think your specialty would be?
I'd like a general covering of most things, I'm sure most people would, but my main stock would probably be shrubs. Especially grown on a bit. I get really frustrated at not being able to buy larger, well grown plants. I know I should have more patience but, when you really need that instant hole filler, they are not easy to find!!
I would also, of course, ban tacky nik naks, badly marketed plants (sprayed multi coloured heathers come to mind) and a tea room that went beyond a cup of tea and a slice of cake at a push. ;D

My nursery would specialise in narcissus bulbs - a huge range not just the range you can get in GC's. I would have to think of something else to keep me going the rest of the year! ;D

As I said on the other thread, grasses and unusual bulbs.....mainly beautiful South African varieties. Then there's geraniums, Saxifrages, Salvias, all manner of unusual pernnials................... I heartily agree with you though Amo, No knick knacks, poorly cared for plants and defo no conservatories, garden cabins etc. Mine would be a Nursery, not a G/C......and if that meant I didn't sell much, so be it!!!

I would just be happy to run the tea room and leave all the plants to you experts But definitely no plastic garden ornaments, patio heaters, faddish 'must haves' and dyed plants! I would also run the fresh veg shop - all locally grown - with seeds and young plants to get people growing their own We can but dream ;D x Tig

I went to a place just like this in st davids in wales, a few years ago, it was run by two sisters ,cakes and scones baked while you waited, lovely pots of tea, juice fir the kids, plants just scattered on the floor outside, a small greenhouse, NO tat, hard to not love a place like it, and probably made just enough to pay your way, but I could be wrong and they might make a fortune.

We had a place like this too Barbara close by to where I lived - two sisters ; sadly as they got older think proved too much - they had an old dog that pottered about the place, it is now closed All the plants in strict A-Z order - you could also wander round their own garden to get ideas - sadly no Tea Shoppe which would have been nice ;D Some signs I would have in my nursery NO CHILDREN UNDER 10 No Smoking Outside No eating crisps or drinking coke No ipods MOBILE 'PHONES SWITCHED OFF £1,000 fine for litter bugs ;D ;D

My own Nursery? Help. But I would like to have little garden like situations where I would show what plants live and look good together. The mixture would be shrubs and perennials and bienals and annuals and veg. Not wanting much ;D There would be a tea room with one big central table where people can drink tea with goodies which would probably make me my hard cash and there would be a library like shelf from which people could read up on things and look at pretty pictures ;D Maybe a puter locked onto the GWD site There would be a real nursery next doors so people could go and buy the plants I propose as good mixtures there. This Nursery would pay me for existing as I bring them loads of customers. .... Any one who wants to run that nursery ? ;D

Ooh that sounds good, can you do marmelade as well? Scones with marmelade and dairy butter or cream njumy and fairy cakes! We'll be mugged by the local weightwatchers if we are not carefull. So there should be fruit trees and shrubs in the nursery then. Maybe some chicken running around in a nice area under the fruit trees? What othere things could we plant there that can stand the proximity of chicken?

If you do carrot cake too that should pacify the weightwatchers ;D Sage and onion goes well with chicken

I think I'd just grow everything I like which is quite a lot...
Roses, Dianthuseseses, Dahlias, Azaleas, Rhododendrons, Heathers, Buddleias and other nectar rich plants.
One thing I would sell is stuff for nature conservation in the garden such as bird boxes and bee house things. That sort of stuff, not ornaments as such. I might sell solar powered stuff such as stuff for ponds etc like pumps.
I'd love to have a little butterfly jungle type thing like they have in Conwy.

Supa quick thinking there ;D Chicken sandwich with sage and onion it is then. But providing we get them fat ourselves should we grow corn for them? I would not want such a crop at my nursery, It takes up too much space and frankly I was very disappointed with this years yield. Climbing sweet smelling roses would go around the tea house. In with April on things like that though if my nursery is in the Netherlands I fear Budds are a nono. ;D A butterfly jungle wow April something to explore that is so very romantic as well. Could a nursery be romantic? We all love gardens like Sissinghurst or Helligan. What would a nursery look like that some how is like those gardens. Must be a real hard trick to scale that down to a lovely nursery with tea room. What about modern? Could you make a nursery that features real modern stuff like lots of grasses and stark lines and still let it be a haven of relaxation peace and calm yet tantalizing? Gosh Amo what have you started me off on

April Thank you, lovely and amzing things. like that deadhead moth that is from Africa and normaly raides beehives there. Incredible it was found in a nearby garden and good that it is now at this center where I hope it does not escape from.

It really is a pleasant place to go to. I love butterflies and once the garden is sorted, I hope to attract lots of them. Only problem is Toffee is rather partial to moths... lol I manage to get most of them off her though and release them back outside.

Yes Plocket. I guess you'd have to do a home visit to check the potential buyers suitability as Clematis owners before you'd consider selling them one ;D ;D I may do the same with my much loved plants. We'd be a right pair I think. Perhaps I should just wash up for Tig in the tea room

And I'd also like to have some hardy geraniums and some epimediums

I think really I'd just grow plants that beneficial insects etc require and try to get more of these plants in people's gardens. Then hopefully there will be an increase of these insects in the area surrounding the nursery and then they'll lay eggs on the plants and end up going with the plant to the new garden and so on and so forth... I'm getting quite excited about this even though I don't have a nursery LOL

Why don't we just all get together and open a Huuuuuge Nursery which sells everything!!! (plants I mean). The Plantfinder book would become redundant because we would have everything at the GWD Nursery! Ooh isn't it exciting to be planning such a venture? ;D
