The wind was howling, and the rain battered on the window, but Jackie didn't mind in the least. She was curled up in her favourite chair watching 'Desperate Housewives' with a glass of her favourite tipple and a box of Maltesers. Oh, how glad she was to have the huge Hotel to herself for once, she got so tired of the guests from the mainland coming over for their Breakaway holidays, but the money was good so she put up with their whims and endless demands. She had been spared this weekend's crowd of bores because the boat which brought them over had sunk and there was no other way to get to the island. They would have to stay in one of the Hotels across the bay. What did she care, she was going to make the most of her time alone. Suddenly, she heard a noise. The old building was full of strange noises, it unsettled the guests sometimes. Idiots! Some of them believed in ghosts. Perhaps she could coin in on that, do some themed weekend parties. What IS that noise? Not familiar at all. Jackie thought she should investigate. Damn, just as the plot on TV was getting interesting. Glass in hand, mouth bursting with sweeties, off she trotted to the big oak door. As she opened it, the lights went out................................

Warily she fumbled to find the spare putter she kept in the gothic umbrella stand - her hand felt the cold metal and her heart thumped with fear as she raised it - ready to strike ...
In the pitch black, engulfed by fear, she edged closer to the door and without warning ........

a sound which echoed through the endless corridors and galleried landings of the old rambling hotel ... shivering uncontrollably she realised that that the place was now spookily quiet - the strange noise was no more. "Get a grip woman" she told herself sternly, "there is nothing to be afraid of" Gathering her composure she cautiously made her way to the dining room.
As she approached she saw a flickering light shining through the crack of the door ...

A young boy, soaked from head to toe, cut and bruised as if he had wandered, lost and alone through a winters night.
Taken aback Jackie stared into the eyes of the two youngsters - she could see fear in their eyes, dark reflective pools of sadness and concern. The french windows were ajar and the chilled night air wafted into the room. Outside the freezing mist had decended, and the sounds of owls hooting and screeching echoed in the distance ...

She peered into the distance
Was that a tall dark handsome highwayman on a horse she wondered? She could make out the outline of such and she heard the sounds of a pistol and the vision of what seemed to be a man on horseback wearing a black cape
He had a strong jawline, sensuous lips and wavy black hair falling over his eyes under his black stetson
She longed to know if .......................

gaunt figure. Pale and colourless, the man looked as if he had not had the sun shine on him for a very long time. His eyes were empty and his look forlorn. For many years now, he had walked the corridors of this, his home, at one time full of the laughter of children. Here he had lived with his wife, taken by consumption. But that had been a very long time ago. All he could remember was that one morning he had awakened to find his son had disappeared. He had grown old here with his daughter, her soul had gone before him to peace, but he could not leave this earth till his son was found. He had thought he had heard the voice of a boy behind this door............dare he open it...............
