Did anyone else have any funny childhood habits?
For example (and a good example of my overactive imagination)
Bedtime routine between the ages of 11 and about 15:
I used to run past the mirror at the bottom of the stairs so the candyman didn't get me, then run up every other step because it was bad luck otherwise, then run past the loft hatch in case the man in the loft tried to grab me (he later moved into the airing cupboard), then turn my bedroom light off and close the curtains quickly so that the IRA man waiting on the ledge underneath my window couldn't shoot me (although he had heat seeking bullets) and then I'd jump onto my bed so that the monster under it couldn't grab my ankles.
Now this was perfectly rational to me at the time based on things I was scared of lol It started off with one thing and then others just got added over time.
Anyone else care to share the fact that they were a freaky child or is it just me? ;D

Oooh April I never switched the light off! And to this day cannot sleep well without a light (and preferably the TV) on. Ooh nooo, don't like the dark! But even with a light on I had to leap onto my bed from a distance so the monster didn't grab my ankles!! So you're not the only one April!!! ;D There was one awful phase when my parents bought me a new lampshade and the bedside light threw the shadow of a skull on the ceiling!!!!! That caused a few nightmares!!!!

At the age of 5, I recall having nightmares after reading Peter Pan - the airing cupboard was in my bedroom - my Dad had to rescue me one night when the crocodile was ticking in the cupboard and I couldn't escape And I had the fear about the bogey-man under the bed who would grab my ankles! My parents decorated my room with flowery wallpaper and matching curtains when I was 10 - I used to find all sorts of weird and scarey shadows in them - just a kids over-active imagination x Tig

Childhood habits? Other than biting my finger and toe-nails you mean?
If I had a nightmare I would hug my ragdoll and whisper "I love mummy; I love daddy; I love (brother); I love (sister)" over and over again to stop me thinking about the dream. I was too terrified to walk down the dark corridor from my room to mum and dads!
There was too much stuff under my bed for a monster to live there!!!

LOL Thanks barbara.
I know what you mean about faces in wall paper etc Tig, I used to have a stained wooden bedroom door which had a couple of demon faces in it and the wall paper had squishy faces in it.
But there are monsters under the bed... ;D

I've been in hysterics reading this thread ;D I had a monster under the bed which would grab ya legs if you didn't get into bed quickly, and a boogey man lived behind the wardrobe and the curtains had to be shut quickly because there was sure to be a face at the window if you looked. Oh and there was also the make sure the bed covers were around my ears so things didn't crawl in them, and I confess I still do this but not because I think things will crawl in my ear but more through habit Plocket, can you still bite ya toe nails then ;D Come on Jenny, MRH and KL spill the beans ;D ;D

What a funny lot you are! I blame the parents. The only thing I can remember is thinking the shadows caused by the folds in the curtains moving in the inevitable draught from the window were boys trying to look in at me . And I know that was only because my Mum told me that lightheartedly little suspecting I would, almost, believe it. Another habit, though unrelated to most on this thread, was to twirl a section of my hair around my finger and when it got too knotted I had to break some of the hair to unravel it. Unfortunately I still do that which is why I ain't got much hair!

I've always thought I was mentaly unstable. Turns out I'm normal then. ;D Nothing dare hide in my bedroom 'coz that was MY space. But there was a "Deebur" in our bathroom. Don't know what a Deebur is,that was just my name for the thing that made the awful groaning noise in there sometimes. (no, it wasn't whatever you're thinking. ) It was the wind blowing accross the drainpipe outside.

My Mum always used to wish me goodnight by saying "Night, night. Sleep tight. Mind the bugs don't bite!" Then go off and leave me worrying about the bugs!!! I'd never heard of bed-bugs, so I used to worry about being bitten by Maybugs and similar giant beetles!

You've just reminded me: when I was little dad told me that there was a "gurgle monster" in the plug hole and I'd leap to get out of the bath before he or mum pulled the plug out!! ;D

Can only remember a couple of things off the top of my head.
I used to have a real fascination with caterpillars. Once I walked all the way to the newsagents with one crawling on my fingers (I also used to let them crawl on my face!).
I also remember once standing on the garden wall, on a grey cloudy day, waving my hands in the air. When my mum asked me what I was doing, I told her with a very straight face that I was trying to wash the clouds because they were dirty!
