Or to be precise Rhamnus alaternus 'Argenteovariegata'?
I have a blank wall at the end of the extension that is close to the drive, about 12 inches between it and the gate being open. I have been looking at a Euonymus fortunei 'Silver Queen' but can only find 1 or 2 ltr pots that are far to small. I'd like something in the 5 - 10 ltr size. The nurseryman who is helping me can't get any, the only ones available had been eaten by deer and were no good but he did suggest I think about a Rhamnus as an alternative. They have also been very elusive at a good size on the internet!
I have quite a few pyracantha including 5 to come up the drive and I wanted something that was as good a doer. Evergreen, flowers, berries, good foliage, grows vertically and clips tightly. The euonymus would have also been partially self clinging too!
I just want to know if the rhamnus would clip as tight to a wall as the above two.

No one grows Rhamnus then! I don't either but, according to my RHS book, the variety you're talking about grows to 5m high and 4m spread. It's also thorny. I think you may be giving yourself a headache trying to keep one cut back to 1' and if it's near a path that'll be even worse. A Euonymous does seem the best bet really but you could think about Garrya eliptica with the long grey catkins or some form of cotoneaster or, heaven forbid, Ivy (hush my mouth, I've just got rid of a nightmare Ivy on my extension). Sorry this isn't very helpful, perhaps someone else will have a brilliant idea or be able to tell you more about Rhamnus.

Takes me so long to type a post that 20 people could make their posts while I'm at it!

Thank you ladies. They only have small plants there too Tig. Good old genteel pyracantha will do 5 x 4 m but it's such a gentleman about it! I wish there were more like it. Deffo no to ivy, the wall is only about 4 x 4m after all. And garryas are lovely, I have two already. I think it's the varigation I'm after, in silver and green. We are still searching for Silver Queen and I have 2 more nurserys to try tomorrow. You know when you have soomething specific stuck in you head???

Good to hear they can take a hard pruning Isabella, thank you. My nursery man has some fine ones of them in stock so it is looking more probable. I know they are a flower arrangers dream too ;D Shallowmead is one I am ringing later Chuckles, it's quite local to me .
