I quite enjoyed last nights programme, hedge-trimming and boys toys apart that is How many 'ordinary' gardens have hedges like Montys? I loved Little Eden, and wished Carol had got the lady to tell us just how she over-winters that lot of tropicals up in Yorkshire? I've added gentiana tibetica and Dahlia David Howard to my wish list ;D x Tig

I did'nt enjoy any of it I'm afraid. Boys and their toys are of no interest to me. I can just about plug in the lawnmower and cut the grass. I do like to see other gardens but I'd rather they talked about how they coped with difficult areas and the range of soils and not at the expense of practical gardening. Even suggestions as to what to plant along with what would be of help.

I watched that too and thought it was one of the better episodes. They did a fair bit of work for £2,000 but of course that does'nt include labour. It's good to see celebrities with small children have pots and bits all over the place like the rest of us do I think. I would'nt be keen on the fake grass either.

Did anyone watch the Natural World last night on BBC? It was a lovely balanced programme with good narration. It's on catch up TV if you've missed it. It was worth seeing the beautiful gardens and all the shots of the wildlife - foxes, badgers and the birdies - barn owls, robins, thrushes etc. I did find some of slow motion shots of gardeners looking oldy worldy and smug annoying. I would love to see the gardens next time I go to Cornwall.

I wish they'd put the garden visits into a separate programme, they take up to much time and attention away from practical gardening Didn't learn anything either....boring!

The programme just seems to be one big ego trip for MD . Filming him from all angles whilst planting the odd bulb in the rain.
I did enjoy the secret garden with the tree house too LG.
The garden visit as Auricula says could be a separate programme. We only get half an hour usually so time is precious.
The programme is not designed for serious gardeners anymore. It is going downhill again. I was just about getting used to Toby and thought he was improving and then he got the chop.

Was that Sarah Raven programme on TV? I can't find any inof about it at all. Another PR disaster from the BBC. Just found this on the show's Facebook page:- "Sadly the Sept & Oct transmission dates for the series have been pulled - no new dates or information from the channel schedulers yet, apologies on their behalf - all very frustrating...." www.facebook.com/pages/BBC-Bees-Butterflies-Blooms/170096569722326

I was amused to see Monty doing a 'sweetpea' trial last night, after what he said at the beginning of the series Mind you, if the powers that be change their minds on the programmes presenter and location again we may never see the results (just wondering what the outcomes would have been for some of the 'trials' started in Birmingham by Toby and crew? I remember one was on leaf mould ) I shall look forward to the piece on Alnwick Amber, any bits that you help with get camera time? x Tig

I didn't see it - what did they do to the Anemones, Auricula? I soaked mine for a few hours and planted them this week.

He didn't soak them at all G, nor did he dig holes. He said he had been told an effective way to plant them - you scuff up the surface, put the corms on top and cover with soil or compost.....and that's it i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/undecided.gif

Just spotted this, its on tonight on BBC Four from 7:00pm to 8:00pm Hidcote: A Garden for All Seasons
Documentary telling the story of Hidcote, the most influential English garden of the 20th century and Lawrence Johnston, the enigmatic genius behind it. Hidcote was the first garden ever taken on by the National Trust, who have spent 3.5 million pounds in a major programme of restoration. As part of this facelift, the garden team have been researching Johnston's original vision and in doing so have uncovered a compelling story that reveals how he created such an iconic garden. Yet until recently, little has been known about its secretive creator and self-taught gardener, Johnston. He kept few, if any, records on Hidcote's construction, but the head gardener at Hidcote, Glyn Jones, has embarked on a personal mission to discover as much about the man as possible to find out how, in the early 20th century, Johnston created a garden that has influenced designers all over the world.
