Just watched Monty and Beechgrove.. What do the Garlic growers Ladygardener, Jilly, Tig, Barbara think of Monty planting the garlic so deep and also what about Chris B planting a whole clove - what exactly will happen to that then?? The highlight of my Sunday to the point that I was gobsmacked was Monty in different trousers...do you think he has changed his suppliers...!!!! RF

I missed CB planting a whole clove, never heard of that before. As to MD planting the garlic so deep, I was surprised and thought I must be doing it wrong all these years Rosefriend, Ladygardener, Rosefriend, what do you think? The first person I thought of when I saw that MD had changed his outfit was you Rosefriend, cheesy Do you think he pops on here and read our coments? I've not seen Beechgrove yet but will catch up with it later today.

I'm guilty of not planting even as deep as that Barbara, my cloves go just below the surface of the soil. I'll maybe plant them a bit deeper this year 'tho since it seems I've been doing it wrong for years. It might give me bigger bulbs if I do that.

I was told to plant spring garlic the same as onion sets so that the tip showed out of the ground and winter garlic so that it was under the ground at a depth the same as the size of the clove... I shall still be planting mine in the 0,4l beakers and putting them in the mini GH on the terrace for the winter, covered in tons of fleece!! Just hope I get them through.. RF

I'm told that spring garlic is OK to RF, is that not an easier option for you? Yes it is Barbara but I am trying to get them a bit bigger than peas!! If they stay whole then the size of Spring garlic is good actually but when I did it before some split anyway and they are sooooo tiny that you can't get the skin off - you ended up eating it as well.. I did well last year but then we didn't really have a winter, did we.. I shall have another go and if I lose them I will go back to Spring sowing.. RF

Did anyone listen to Gardeners Question Time yesterday? (repeated tomorrow) When asked about planting bulbs in pots Bob Flowerdew said he plants Lilies and Tulips in the same pot. The lilies take over in the summer from the Tulips. Has anyone tried this? I thought I might. undecidex

Not sure whether it is a good idea or not - I planted some lily bulbs that I had had in tubs since last November in the garden last week and the pots were jammed packed with roots - not sure the tulips would have had enough room.. Got a mail from Olaf that he is on TV tomorrow talking on a Gardening programme about Topiary...cuts with Monty but I will watch it, I am really pleased for him.. Rf

How fab Rosefriend. coox GQT is repeated on a Sunday on BBC Radio 4 at 14.00hrs our time. Yes I've planted out a few of my lilies too a few weeks ago and they did have a good few roots, I'm not quite sure there would be room for Tulips as well. mm on 2nd thoughts perhaps I'll just leave my lilies in their own pots. I just thought it would be a way to cut down on the number of pots.

Well I am sure that Bob Flowerdew knows more about gardening that I ever will, but 2 things would bother me - the tulip leaves when they had finished and then the root space...
Whatever happened to Charlie (?) - blonde hair, double D's??

Very interested this morning on Beechgrove about the test with Indian Summer Alstro outside with straw - see how it fairs the winter...
Also that the Tomtato is a waste of time - did wonder when T & M started selling them...cost a fair amount as well, too much!!
Ready to put my Camellias in the GH for winter as well..amazing that some are flowering at Beechgrove!!

I have an old Vegetable growing handbook form the 1930's where there is a description of how to graft tomato tops on to potato haulms. The author reckoned it was not worth the effort then.

I've not yet caught up with Beechgrove this week but I'm not at all surprised the Tomato/Potato did'nt work out too well. If one got blight then the other would as well for one thing! I think you're referring to Charlie Dimmock, she was in those fixit / makeover programmes was'nt she. I don't know what she's up to now Rosefriend,. I never liked her.

Monty Don has a brand new gardening series on every night next week - BBC2 I think. It's something like "small spaces and big ideas" or something Thanks Auricula, this is what tvlistings says about it. 1/5. New series. Monty Don helps amateur horticulturists who have small or average-sized gardens but are planning to do something extraordinary with them. Today, a couple battle to turn a clay-clogged building site in Petworth, West Sussex, into a piece of Portugal, while another tackle years of overgrowth in their new back garden in their determination to create a productive space. Continues weeknights 7pm. It must just be on for one week then. Did anyone hear when the Christine Walkden programme is coming on? Ladygardener, Rosefriend, Barbara, owdboggy, Auricula, I thought GW was rubbish this week, don't be holding your breath waiting on it in the morning Rosefriend.

Just found this from Christine Walkden's web site.
I have spent this summer filming a new 15 part BBC 1 Series called Glorious Gardens from Above. This is due to be shown at 3.15pm on BBC 1 daily on weekdays for three weeks starting on November 3rd 2014.

It's filmed from a hot air balloon LG, I'm not sure how much planting you'll get to see.

The trouble with gardening programmes like Beechgrove and GW is that gardening is cyclical. The same tasks need doing at the same time of the year and after watching for several years they are bound to be repetitive. They try to add "twists" like makeover shows / courtyard outdoor entertaining space gardens / wildflower meadows etc but the actual hands on tasks that most of us undertake ( planting/ propagating / compost making etc) follows a well worn format. However I do wish MD would get on with things instead of walking up and down with the b****y wheelbarrow or stopping to pat the blessed dog! Bring back Chris Beardshaw

It's filmed from a hot air balloon LG, I'm not sure how much planting you'll get to see. I think it also shows Christine speaking to gardeners and giving tips as well 'tho Barbara. It's in 15 parts and will visit gardens in the UK that have inspired her career. In one of the gardening magazines I saw, I think she was sitting chatting to Beth Chatto about gardening while the helicopter was nearby. winx Series director Gavin Ahern said Glorious Gardens From Above would not just be about gardens but would also focus on people’s relationships with gardens. “There will be great practical gardening advice from Christine and we’ll share a wealth of knowledge from professional gardeners across the UK,” he said.

Bring back Chris Beardshaw Well said......I couldn't agree more I want to get hold of him and shake him sometimes when he's talking about something, he does that slow time wasting waffle when it could be so much more interesting. I agree its repetitive year on year, however it does have to cater for new gardeners. Saying that the way he presents doesn't really give newbies much of a clue imo

Chuckles, Auricula, of course I take your point about things that need done every year and catering for new gardeners. However, Beechgrove Garden has been going since 1978 with Jim McColl being one of the original presenters. The same plot of land has been used every year with different parts of it being transformed over the years. It has remained up to date, with fresh ideas as well as timely information about what to do now. In my opinion they have the right formula for an interesting and current gardening programme with lots of information covering both plants, shrubs and veg. The addition of Chris Beardshaw this year has added yet another dimension to the programme.

I stopped watching Beechgrove earlier this year....too many "trials", shrubs , and definitely....... too much veg!! even CB couldn't hold my attention but I agree, it's a well produced programme ( although Jim speaks so slowly I could smack him) and if you grow veg, it's ideal

In the UK almost every growing year is a bit different, dependent on our unreliable weather, but the basic advice will remain the same, and that would apply to any gardening programme. Beechgrove wins hands down over GW for me. The programme is more diverse & informative, and I agree with everyone about the time wasted on GW with tennis balls & wheelbarrow pushing being good examples. I'm happy to watch most gardening programmes though, not so keen on the 'make-over' ones which cost a fortune as they are unrealistic for most viewers aspirations.
