I know I should have listened to some of you with regard to Thompson and Morgan!
I ordered a bearded Iris collection (rhizomes not plants) in early November and have only just received them today. I am not sure now whether it is too late to plant out the rhizomes or whether cold weather and frost will kill them off.
Is it possible to plant the rhizomes in pots and if so, where shall I keep them? I only have a small unheated mini greenhouse, a shed with windows, or perhaps keep the pots in my back room that has french doors.
Please, any ideas would be much appreciated.

How big are the rhyzomes, and do they look healthy, free from mould PJ? I have a few growing, they are old and quite large, if I need to I divide them after flowering, and mine seem virtually indestructable! My garden is frozen solid at the moment, and I couldn't plant anything even if I wanted to! If your garden is more sheltered you may be OK to plant them out I have had a google and you can pot them up, they don't like to be too wet though and will need free draining compost. Others may with more experience will offer more advice for you, I'm sure x Tig

I'd pot them up and put them in your mini G/H. Not too heavy with the water. They'll get away better next year than if you try planting them out now.

Thanks Tig and Supa for your advice. I think I will pot them up and put in mini greenhouse and hope for the best. I don't think T and R should have sent them out so late. If they don't survive the winter I will demand a refund.

Oh do print a photo of them when they flower - these are one of my fav flowers - no success in my garden at all - they get eaten continually by I put down pellets, crushed egg shells but whatever it is they wither and die I think may be an idea to pop them in a container

Jenny - this may sound a bit daft - but last year I had real trouble with my irises and gladiolas. Each morning I would find chewed stems and sometimes just the flower head lying on the soil (if they had been able to grow that far). OH blamed the rabbits but I have never seen them come that close to the house. Then one day I was sitting on the patio just having a cup of tea and I could hear munching. It was a mouse tucking into a gladiola! So I guess that's where my irises went too!
