As I've been up since the early hours this morning, and it's nearly the end of 2008, I've been thinking of this past years gardening successes and failures. ;D It's been a first for me with so many flowers and veg this year but in terms of finally getting healthy plants then I have to say that mine was the Basil, sent by Karlslass. That's the first time I got basil to grow for me. Has anyone else had success with something they've not been able to grow before.?

I hadn't really grown vegetables before (just a few tomatoes in pots up til this year) so I was amazed at how well the parsnips grew, and how the tiny little leek seeds went from something that looked like blades of grass to big healthy leeks and how easy carrots were to grow and what fun the boys thought it was to pull them up for supper. The sweetcorn was a dismal failure and the rest may have been beginners luck but I was really pleased and can't wait to try again this year! What a lovely thread to start to end the year LNG. Happy New Year to everyone and lots of luck with the gardening in 2009!

Getting my gingers to flower was good this year
Disappointments has to be the Impatiens and really the summer bedding in general but that was very weather orientated

I enjoyed trying to grow my sweet potatoes, it wasn't really a great success in terms of harvest but it was a great adventure! The carrots in my bucket were a triumph, no sign of carrot root fly! And getting just one cucumber (my first!) and several gherkins was very rewarding. The best was the summer squash, it delivered loads and they were all scrummy yummy Flower wise - most things did OK, even my impatiens. Disappointments were from bought plants which were not the the colour they were supposed to be, but hey, they grew

I think my main successes this year were the potatoes, runner beans and the celeriac (which is still in the ground and seems to be growing ok).
The things which did not do too well for me this year were the sweet peppers, courgettes, squashes and the bulb fennel.
Still, I've enjoyed it nontheless and am looking forward to really getting going with the allotment next year. I can't wait!

We have been over the moon with the pumkins and squashes this year! We've bought loads of seed for next and have plans for the top bank Failures, the cucumbers were terrible. We had so many last year we couldn't cope, this year, not one. The Tomatoes weren't as big a success as they should have been either. I have also been over the moon with OH's stirling efforts with his errections in the garden. I have managed to plant quite a lot of backbone planting and I'm looking forward to there not being quite so much bare soil this year , And of course the extension at the front of the house has been wonderful this Chistmas but the next bit....... I'm soooo excited!!! A whole new garden area! But that's next year.

Naughty naughty FB (creased me up too ) My sweet peppers did really well. I was chuffed as I haven't grown them for years. The little toms did well too. Roses were good. Can't really remember anything else.

Seeing as I seem to have inadvertently lowered the tone ( apologies LNG) , didn't your OH end up with a rather stunning one for you too Ruthie? And Chuckles' OH had one for her at the beginning of the summer! We really mustn't forget those who put up with our obsession often plodding away at the 'his' tasks (and the patient nods of the OH female types for the fellas of the board ) and occasionally out doing themselves. ;D

Oh yes my Summer House and Hot Tub was the greatest success in our garden and OH still uses it every morning It will be 1 year old at the end of February, gosh time does fly. Had lots of little successes during 2008 that mean just as much though. The intial start of the trials were great although the end results were not quite as I'd have liked, that was down to the weather though so out of my control. Fingers crossed for 2009 ;D The intro of two chickens into my life and now the garden has been an experience and a success, Mmmmm how succesful that will be during the coming months of stuff growing in the garden, we'll see ;D Heres to great successes and hopefully more erections in our gardens in 2009 ;D ;D something was happening in my garden on the 23rd December

I think the stand of sweetcorn was the greatest success - from 40 plants we had more than we could get tired of, and they really are so much better fresh off the plant. The cucumbers were hugely successful - but not the greatest success. I'd never grown them before, and six plants swamped us in cues to the point where the novelty soon wore off. Memo to self: grow maybe two this year... OM.

OM I was a bit like that with my courgettes early on in the season too. I'll know better this year but I was delighted with them. Chuckles I remember you getting your Hot Tub, I can't believe it was nearly a year ago. Time really does fly sometimes:o FB what do you consider your greatest success I wonder.

Well lng,i had a very good crop of potatoes,i have more than enough to last till the new ones in June, and some were HUGE.
Parsnips and beetroot were good, and although we have them everyday, there will be enough for another 3 months at least. Carrots were decent, though not brill Runner beans were v good, but i went on holiday when they were at their best, and when i came home they were too old. Sweet peas were v good also.

my greatest success was keeping on top of the work in the garden , the failure was bedding plants particularly impatiens which were a complete washout. Other people seem to have had the same problem so maybe not really my fault altogether.

Our greatest success last year was getting the lawn down and finally sorting the garden out a bit (not that you would believe it if you could see it now!) I was pleased with the way it turned out, but still plan to do some "tweaking" as in making better use of the beds. I am going to have flowers and veg all mixed in and also this year we are hoping to sort the front out, funds allowing. Just waiting to hear if Karl has got a job that would give him at least 6 months definate work so please keep everything crossed for us

Beanie, bedding plants were indeed difficult for some last year, probabley due to the wet summer. Hopefully this year will be drier and warmer. KL I do hope Karl gets some work and things pick up for you.

Yes we do ;D My greatest succes? Hm probably the long border at MssK in Autum bursting with life and colour. That or surviving all new things there as this was the first year I did her garden complete. In 2009 I hope to derive as much pleasure out of it as in 2008.

My greatest success ever was probably getting Japanese maple cuttings to root.....not the easiest thing to do by a country mile and i suppose i had about 5% root.
