Just bought a new lean-to greenhouse to replace my mini one. It is slightly bigger and made of toughened glass. It is approx. 4' 2" wide, 5' tall and 2' deep. Awaiting delivery within the next week or so. I will post of photo when it is put up.
Can't wait for it to arrive!

Lucky you PJ I wish I had space for one, but a porch of some sort over the back door is probably my best option. Look forward to seeing your piccies and all the extra things you will grow in it! x Tig

Thanks LNG and Tig. I am getting really excited and have sorted all my seeds out and put them in a tin. I have to admit, though, that the greenhouse does not really have much more usable space than my little mini greenhouse. I will probably keep that on the go too for the overflow!

Good luck PJ! If it's any consolation, you could own the Eden Bio domes and you'd soon out grow them. Nature of the beast I guess ;D ;D ;D

Who did you order it from PJ - I have been looking at them in the gardening magazines but don't really know any of the companies that are advertising.

How brilliant PJ you will have fun with that I'm sure. Good idea to keep the other one on the go though.
Happy Greenhousing ;D

Who did you order it from PJ - I have been looking at them in the gardening magazines but don't really know any of the companies that are advertising. Hi Jasmine. I ordered it from a company called The Greenhouse People. Their original price was £99 but as the carriage was £35 I looked elsewhere too. But lucky for me I checked their website again after Christmas and they had reduced it to £79. So it worked out cheaper than anywhere else. About three days after I ordered it they put the price up to £99. Some companies are selling it for more than £150. The one disadvantage is they do not appear to sell greenhouse shelves anywhere that are the right size for the greenhouse. So what I have done is buy two sets of shelving units from B & Q and OH is going to cut the tops off. They were much cheaper than greenhouse staging and each unit has 4 or 5 shelves. I will post photos when it is completed. Could be a while. Thanks too to Amo and Chuckles. Yes I am thinking of keeping my mini greenhouse, even though the plastic covers are a bit torn now. PJ

OH and I have built the greenhouse. Just need to fix it to the wall on the decking and put the shelving units in. (These need to be sawn a few inches as they are too tall, but they are amazing quality for B & Q cheapies and the line has been discontinued). About a quarter of the price of special greenhouse shelving and very good quality. PJ

Jasmine, my OH is pretty good at it but he did lose it a bit. It took us both about 4 1/2 hours and a little swearing was to be heard.
We laid all the pieces in number order on the floor of our back room and constructed it there. It is now balancing on the decking to be attached to the wall in due course. Could be a while.

Here it is unattached to wall without shelving! And now with OH proudly standing in front with shelving unit in place as it begins to get dark. He had to assemble shelving unit before he attached greenhouse to the wall as it is impossible to fit the unit in afterwards. So I had to be sure the distance between the shelves as I can't change it now.

I'd say neat and "compact" in estate agent terms, Dr Bill. Not as large as I'd like it but not prepared to go whole hog with a bigger greenhouse.
Had not thought about heating it. How would I get wires through the French doors into the greenhouse?

I wonder if it's really worth the trouble for a small greenhouse. I bought a tiny paraffin heater for mine but didn't use it after the first season. The greenhouse was too small to everwinter any plants of any size

Looks great PJ - it is in a sheltered spot by the looks of things and close to the house which will all help to keep the temperature up.

Well PJ that looks brilliant, the white walls will help no end with reflecting light too. I wonder if you could get away with just having one of those chunky candles burning in there if you need just to keep it frost free. I'd be inclined to have a blanket to throw over the top too on minus nights just to keep any warmth in. I'm all excited for you PJ, it really was made for that space wasn't it

Oh thanks all you peeps for your kind words. Chuckles I have tears in my eyes, just thinking of all you lovely people. I will consider the candle thing and maybe throwing an old blanket on the roof. Perhaps I could ask OH to sleep up there on cold nights! Tig and Jasmine, the space does seem just made for the greenhouse. The light walls and proximity to the house. Save me trundling down the garden in old dressing gown. The wind is truly whipping up this evening. Hope my OH attached it well enough to the wall. Dr. Bill, yhes it is funny jumping from Diggit to Gtreenhouse post. I'll just have a peep in the Dggit now before I slump in front of the TV again

Hi Tig I sowed my pennisetum seeds on 29 January. I am so afraid they won't germinate (remember my boxing day onions!) I have them in my back room by the french windows. Nothing showing yet. Yours were peeping through within about 4 days weren't they.

Post by Tig on Jan 31, 2009 15:54:01 GMT
Yes 4 days exactly. I followed the 'destructions' to the letter! Put the pots in my unheated propagator in the front bedroom. 6 germinated in one pot, 4 in the other. They are out of the propagator now. So yours may be through by Monday.
x Tig
