By starting this Thread I feel I am now committed and cant back out I am going to make my own Marmalade Reason is that EVERY morning my brekky is toast, coffee, marmalade and just recently not been happy with any of the marmalade bought GF gave me a jar last Christmas, home made, and the difference was so very obvious I notice in Feb issue of Country Living there are 3 pages of how to do it - cant be that hard ;D So if anyone has any hints, tips b 4 I begin would appreciate it I am stuck on the "butter muslin" what is that? and I need to buy a Preserving Pan and a Jam funnel Oh and get some jars together - that could delay me for a while

You are going to start me off jennywrenn - I haven't made marmalade for ages My'tips'would be to buy a stainless steel preserving pan. Muslin is a very thin sort of material - you may be lucky in buying some if you have an old-fashioned haberdashery shop. You can buy muslin nappies for babies When you cook the peel make sure it is well cooked or it will be a bit tough in your marmalade. I got a jam funnel for Christmas - at last ;D

I listened to it Jenny. It was most certainly Phil or Jill Archer making the marmalade. Both smug and sanctimonious and perfect marmalade makers. Unlike my marmalade which I boiled for too long and it crystallized. You need a huge pot for boiling it.

It didnt go too well in the Archers today with the marmalade making The temperature gauge melted so they tipped it all in the bin and the bin liner melted

I love Marmalade on toast first thing in the morning. Jen there was a large shop in Manchester near Kendals which sells Preserving pans and every sort of utensil for cooking, I just loved looking around it, dont know if its still there as I havent been to Manchester for a while.

Ooo I cant think which shop this was - only go into Manchester in an evening but I do know Kendals has a late night on a Thursday - I think there is a shop in Macc that sells them - one in Trentham Gardens said they could order one - am getting there ;D
Got about 5 jars so far - you can buy them think they are called Kilner jars but think they could be expensive

Could you ask at work if anyone saves jam jars? I've got a shelf full in the shed for when I make strawberry jam (not much use as you are so far away) but I'd share with anyone here who mentioned they needed jars! Have a feeling Lakeland sell jam jars and they probably have a preserving pan and other marmalade making kit...and they deliver. I've always thought about trying marmalade because I love marmalade with really chunky peel in it but it always sounds a bit trickier than jam making!

Just checked Lakeland and they do sell jam jars and they are doing a special offer on a preserving pan and a thermometer at the moment.

OOO I have only just seen this and I passed Lakeland last week
I have been lent a thermometer and think I have a pan that will serve as a preserving pan but not sure - they seem to be about £40 which is a lot if the one I have will suffice
It is taking longer than ever
Have got enough jam jars now, I think, just need to sort out the bloomin pan
Will keep you posted Jasmine ;D
