What happened to the marmalade Jen?
I made some earlier this year and it went down a storm - didn't last long. That was my first attempt at preserves but I recently did some green tomato chutney (which needs to mature so I don't know yet how that will turn our) and lemon marmalade which was delish.
I enjoyed the process very much (and the results even more) so I am going to invest in a proper preserving pan (used an aluminium stock pot before) and a funnel (filling hot jars with a ladle is a messy business)

I bought a preserving pan and kilner jars last year, and set to and made marmalade. The first batch was runny and the second batch was completely solid!!!!! Having bought the gear, I will try again next spring.......possibly!! ;D ;D

If you have the kit and like the 'tradition' then starting with an orange is the way to go - but for £1.50 I buy a huge can of MaMade sliced Seville oranges from the supermarket and with the addition of some sugar and water, maybe a drop or two of lemon juice to sharpen it, 15 minutes later I have 6 jars of marmalade. Experiment with the sugar content - it will set with less than they suggest if you prefer a better fruit/sugar ratio.

MaMade looks a good bet OM, does it taste synthetic though ( with having preservatives?)

I bought some from the WI stall at the local craft fair At least I assumed it was Home Made ;D As I have marmalade every single day of the week, with my toast, I really should think about making some Maybe over the Christmas Holidays

MaMade looks a good bet OM, does it taste synthetic though ( with having preservatives?) Hadn't noticed anything other than marmaladyness... says "prepared Seville bitter oranges (75%), water, citric acid, gelling agent (pectin)" on the tin so nothing to pickle the brain there. I was just musing on the economy, let alone the control over sugar content: I reckon the 5 or 6 jars cost 3 quid: 50/60p per jar: less than half the price of Coopers, almost a third. Sometimes I put a drop of Scotch in it when there's a couple of jar's worth left in the pan to ring the breakfast changes. OM

How much is 'a drop' of Scotch OM? I wouldn't want to add too much and stop it setting x Tig

;D Somehow making cocktails out of it does not seem an option either when things go badly awry.

I keep thinking about trying marmalade. A friend of mine makes her own every year and she cuts the peel nice and chunky - I love it that way. I can just hear my dad agreeing whole heartedly with the drop of scotch idea OM ;D

I can remember my Nan buying huge tins of something similar OM, could have been the same stuff I guess. She used to get loads of jars of marmalade from it. Like the idea of the extra ingredient ;D

How much is 'a drop' of Scotch OM? I wouldn't want to add too much and stop it setting x Tig I generally put a capfull in what's left of the mix after three 'plain' jars have been taken - so that's a capfull to the three remaining jars. I've just noticed an invitation to write off for free marmalade recipes and jar labels: send a large sae to MaMade Leaflet and Label Offers, PO Box 439, AL4 0YG. Says nothing about proof of purchase... OM.

My mum who makes all her jams & chutneys from scratch swears by MaMade, I've just got a can myself & I'm planning to make it either this weekend or next. A very timely suggestion for an extra ingredient OM.

I'm making marmalade today, I'm putting whisky in some, any suggestions for something different for the others. I might give one as a present to an elderly aunt, she loves a drop or two when it's cold weather.

There is a lady nearby whose brother grows fruits all sorts and she offers jars at 2.70 Euro a piece. Making your own seems like a good idea to provide a little income too then ;D
