Yes I know what you're all thinking Actually its more in the way of advice. I have persuaded Karl that despite the credit crunch and the rest of the doom and gloom we need a holiday. Usually we stay in this country and we have had some lovely holidays, but I need some sunshine. I have been looking at villa holidays in Rhodes. Can someone tell me how long the flight is - will we need an inflight feed? (Karl has never flown before so a meal might not be the best idea ever!) Has anybody been in back end of Sept/Oct (we cant afford to go at other times!) and whats it really like ? Specially like the look of Kalathos/Lindos. We shall be avoiding Falaraki for definate !! I have read loads of reviews and it seems you either love it or hate it, but none of them actually tell you what the place is like. All information greatly appreciated - thanks in advance.

Rain check on that KL, this is what I got on a search
Wed, 07 Oct 09 Flight TOM 3300 08:00 Depart Doncaster Sheffield (DSA) 14:25 Arrive Rhodes (RHO) Wed, 14 Oct 09 Flight TOM 3301 15:25 Depart Rhodes (RHO) 17:55 Arrive Doncaster Sheffield (DSA)
So thats 6 1/2 hrs going and only 2 1/2 coming back, must be wrong I'll look at some others and see what they say, week earlier is the same, don't understand that. It can only mean it's not a direct flight going or something, not sure. Outbound Wed, 30 Sep 09 08:00 TOM 3300 14:25 Inbound Wed, 07 Oct 09 15:25 TOM 3301 17:55

You would be gaining some time going out and losing some coming back which would be built into your departure/arrival time! It would be about 2 hours I should think making the flight time 4 1/2 hours!

Might be an idea to look on TripAdvisor.com for Rhodes, they do specific forums for different holiday locations. Skyscanner is a good sight for seeing a range of deals. If you are looking for a villa you will most probably find they are cheaper the more people that go, so quite expensive for 2 people only. Maybe B&B in a hotel complex would work out cheaper, depends what you are looking for from a holiday I guess. Would be great if someone on here had been and knew the crack though. I'm counting down for Portugal 14 weeks yesterday.

I have been quite pleasantly surprised at the cost, it is more expensive for 2 but we like our own company and to be honest hotel/apartment complexes all look so awful to us. We are a funny pair! If thats what you like Im sure its fine, its just not for us. I have only been to Malta and that was fab, unfortunatley it was my honeymoon so the company wasn't up to much !!!!!!!!! Would like to go back but it seems a bit weird to go with Karl - see what I mean about funny ;D

KL I'm totally with you, we like our own company too and having neighbours as such in a hotel or an apartment as such can ruin a holiday, you get a bit more privacy and space with a villa, good look.

KL have a look on www.jamesvillas.co.uk they are doing some deals atm like free car and free travel insurance. You can do just the villa or villas and flight, worth a look.

Hi KL. about 4 1/2 hour would be about right for Rhodes, it's about 3 and 3/4 from Gatwick.
A villa is going to be expensive for the 2 of you. Why don't you check out the self-catering accommodation? Plenty of them are small and you don't have to mix with the others. Some even have little bungalows.
I recommend Pefkos, Lardos, Stegna, Haraki, Kalithea, Afandou, and (gasp!) Faliraki outskirts (the boozy kids don't move far from their bar and club area, and it's got 2 lovely beaches and a pretty harbour)
Do not recommend the resorts up near Rhodes Town. Some high rise prison blocks, and beaches not so good. Also steer clear of Lindos - it's very beautiful and well worth a visit, but very steep with tiny streets, and absolutely packed out with day trippers every day! Kalathos is much nicer but I believe there's only 1 or 2 big hotels there, and not much else.
I've been to Rhodes about 4 times in October and the weather was mostly pretty good, though you might be unlucky with a storm or two (and they are short but heavy)

Thanks NO I must admit I was hoping you would answer my plea! We dont mind paying a bit extra to have privacy! Makes us sound really awful dont it, but we just dont mix well with other people (when I say we I mean me mostly!! ) I find other peoples kids particularly aggravating Still undecided, Karl is beginning to flap about the amount of money it could cost. I know its a lot, but Im that fed up I need something to look forward to and aim for and Im afraid a week in a chalet in Wales just dont do it for me - sorry !

I know what you mean KL, I'm pretty antisocial too!! I don't normally have trouble keeping myself to myself on hols.
What's your main priority re location? I mean, is it a fab beach, lots of nightlife, peace and quiet, central for exploring, or what?
Do you like walking, or scuba-diving (Kalithea is best place for that). Best beaches (IMO) are Pefkos, Faliraki, and one close to Haraki.
There's also a gorgeous one, only accessible by car (unless you like mountain hiking!) near a high peak with fertility powers which I cannot remember the name of (will have to go and google now or it will drive me mad all day!!)

The fab beach is called Tsambika, over looked by the small mountain-top monastery of the Virgin of Tsambika. Women who have trouble conceiving are supposed to climb the path to the top on hands and knees to pray to the Virgin, then stay all night up there. Afterwards they are pregnant, but some cynical souls have suggested that this is more likely due to spending the night up there with randy monks than a miracle by the Virgin!!! ;D ;D ;D Whatever, there are an awful lot of people on Rhodes named Tsambika or Tsambikos (male), so quite a few women have successfully made the trip up there!! Anyway, the beach there is gorgeous, and I gather that there are tavernas and watersports there now wheras there used to be nothing much at all. I also googled the price of villas at end of Sept. 2 weeks is over £800 per person!!!! That's an awful lot to pay for privacy!!! PS - I see that Kalathos has a lot more there than I remember. I haven't been to Rhodes for about 10 years. If you want a shock, get on Googlemap and zoom in on Lindos. When you see how closely packed the buildings in the village are you'll understand why I said not the greatest place to stay in. Positively claustrophobic!!!

Well tell you what NO the one place I will be avoiding like the plague is Tsambika !!!! ;D We are still in negotiation about the holiday and I know its a lot of money, but I do have my heart set on a villa. I think we will probably save up and then see whats available later in the year. Thanks so much for your advice NO, at least I have a better idea of where to avoid now - Lindos sounds horrendous! I will have a look on Goggle Earth if I can ever work it I feel drawn to Rhodes and I cant explain why, of all the places in the world why have I picked Rhodes Curioser and curioser (cant spell !)

I always go to Google maps. just type in Lindos, Rhodes and then zoom in on the satellite version. Why shouldn't you be drawn to Rhodes? I was, in the 90s, and went back 6 times! It's a lovely island The harbour in Rhodes Town is very nice (shame the Collossus has gone), and the Old Town and Castle built by the Knights of St John are in great condition and very interesting. You can go to Turkey for the day from the harbour. The Acropolis at Lindos is brilliant. Fab views from the top. There are several castle ruins scattered along the coast. Try a trip down to the bottom end where the Med collides with the Aegean Sea and you can actually see the join streching away across the sea! Rhodes is pretty big (3rd largest island), and transfers to the more southerly end (Lardos, Pefkos) can be 1 - 2 hours. I have a very soft spot for Pefkos, went back 4 times! Lardos village is lovely old-fashioned Greek original, with the beach area about 2 kms away. There is a new resort being pushed called Kiotari. They say it is lovely but when I passed through about 10 years ago it was horrble!!!

Hi KL and that Globetrotter Nightowl. If you are spending money that you are cagey about spending in the first place, it is wise to try to eliminate possible annoyances. It would be awful for your holiday to be ruined by noisy intrusive fellow holidaymakers, you would come home feeling even more miserable. By the sound of it, you both need to find somewhere you can forget your worries, then you can come home feeling buoyed up enough to tackle the world.
