My mum (bless her) has made me a huge patchwork quilt (which I asked for eight years ago). It's now finished except for being backed, and we are trying to think of a name, because she names all her quilts. It's a log cabin design done in "autumn colours" of yellows, greens, oranges and reds, and the inspiration came from Fall in the US - you know, where tourists travel specially to see the autumn leaves. Anyway - as an example, LP's pink rose quilt is called "Rose Bed" (coz it goes on her bed!). Could you come up with suggestions for my quilt, possibly suggesting gardening, leaves, autumn or stuff like that? So far we've come up with "Autumn Bedding". Many thanks!

Not yet Jenny - we're still thinking and don't see mum for a couple of weeks. OH has to approve too They are beautiful aren't they? I have a couple more too but they are in the airing cupboard. One day one of them will hang on the wall on the way up the stairs, and the other one might have to be returned to mum because it was on loan for the spare bed but that room is all changing now and it won't match. It's got lots of mother of pearl buttons on it. My mum is very clever (proud daughter statement - not a boast)

Absolutely marvellous-Works of Art. You have a very talented Mum and have every right to be proud of her. Have you ever been inclined to do similar work? I am so envious-

Gosh no Biggles I haven't the patience - I had high hopes as a teenager but my "quilt" ended up as a pin-cushion because I got so bored!!!
Thank you too Tig and Blod (hia Blod - haven't seen you for a while. I hope you are well and that OH is better now)

Hi LNG! They are lovely and cosy, so much so that I've asked for ours not to have wadding in so it's just layers of cotton fabric. I honestly don't know how much time they take and it depends on how mum is making a quilt. Ours are machine sewn so go together more quickly than something that's hand sewn. Also it depends on the way it's quilted and whether mum is going to embellish the quilt, which she often does with her exhibition pieces. I really don't know how long ours took because she did it in secret and in rather a rush so that we'd have it for Christmas Put it this way: she used to teach patchwork and quilting, and her students could make a quilt in a year.

They are lovely P, everyone should have one. Reminded me of the lovely feather filled eiderdown I had as a child at my Nans, it was a plain pink satin quilt. I like Autumn Glory the same as Susie suggested Or Autumn Dreams or Autumn Slumber

Ok well I gave your suggestions to mum, and mine which was "Bountiful" - it's the name of a cooking apple and suggests harvest. Well I'm sorry to say she has rejected them all and is going to call it "Leaves". Don't tell mum but I think it's quite a dull name, but it does sum up the inspiration for the colour scheme!

Well, in fairness, she did make it!
Actually, it's really interesting that your Mum names her quilts. Do you know what prompted to start naming them? It makes them seem more than just a quilt. I'm not explaining myself very well. It makes me think of mediaeval craftsmen who named the things they crafted. I chose the word crafted because I think this is what I mean rather than made, which sounds more utilitarian. It's also more akin to art, where paintings and sculptures are named.
